Mr. Fannin is "suspect?" A Court of Law just found that Karen Berry BROKE THE LAW to win this election!! Is that the kind of person you people want in office? A CRIMINAL? She needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law--it is time someone was made the example!
I am so embarrassed that this happened in the district that I live in. I didn't support either one of those candidates and NEVER will. Berry should serve time in prison and be BANNED from EVER seeking public office again. She should also be removed from the school board.
If she files an appeal, it will show what a true disgrace she is to the county. Her lawyer needs to know this is NOT ABOUT HIM and WINNING. This is about justice and fairness. If he has a grain of decency, he will advise her to give it up! However, knowing who he is, hell is likely to freeze over first.

Mrs. Jennifer Lindsey has been such a BLESSING to our school and art program! If you want to be impressed beyond belief, go take a look at the art work her students exhibit in the lobby of our school! A big THANK YOU to the TU art students for their donations to our program! What an amazing way to "pay it forward!"

Captain, you have a BIG chip on your shoulder! Bitter much? I won't even respond to your ridiculous comments!! Criticizing a man who wants a safe neighborhood for his children because he has a GOATEE? YOU are the one who should be ashamed!
Do any of you uninformed idiots realize that a man was killed on Spradley Drive a couple of weeks ago? Traffic in that neighborhood has already DOUBLED in the past decade due to Wildridge and Prospect Ridge neighborhoods. I do not blame the residents of Wildridge/Country Club ONE BIT for not wanting more traffic in their neighborhood! the problem is only about 20% property values as Wildridge has its own Garden Home section and 80% traffic! The issue is 80+ cars going in and out of that neighborhood every day!
The planning commission did the right thing here. Mr. Stell needs to go somewhere else to build more homes. This town is so over-run with new construction that isn't worth CLOSE to what the builders are asking. $100+ a square foot for CRAP!! These builders are building a $50,000 house and selling it for $140K+!! It is ridiculous! Find somewhere else to build them and keep the extra cars OUT of Wildridge and Country Club!!

Definition for Pandemic Influenza:
"A Global disease outbreak that occurs when a new influenza virus emerges for which people have little or no immunity and for which there is no vaccine."
Someone mentioned the people who have died from H1N1 influenza. Do your research and you will find out that more people die every year from NORMAL, EVERY DAY Type B Influenza. Why does that happen? Because people do not treat their symptoms, they do not seek medical care and/or they live in a country with little or no healthcare or medications. I also read recently about a young man in the US who was misdiagnosed with as having strep throat, put on an strong antibiotic who later died from what was discovered to be H1N1.
Describing the flu outbreak as a PANDEMIC PANIC in Pike County was ridiculous and incorrect. Period.

What turtle means is that the media is making the Swine Flu out to be WAY WORSE than it really is. Personally, I believe the National media is over-hyping swine in an effort to promote Obama's government run health care program. Use scare tactics to frighten the public into a socialist healthcare system!! But that is a totally different topic!! I appreciate the Messenger running stories about this as it is important for parents to know that the flu is going around.
The swine flu, or Type A flu that is going around is MILD. According to our pediatrician in Montgomery, they are seeing 3 types of flu right now. A Type B that is the worst of them all, a Type A non-swine and Type A Swine. Patients are well within 3-5 days when they use Tamiflu. Take your medication, treat your fever with Advil or Tylenol and you will be fine. It doesn't matter if it is swine or not--the flu is not something to take lightly, but it isn't something to freak out over either!
The problem we have is when sick people are taking their Advil or Tylenol they are fine and seem non-symptomatic. That is when their guard goes down and they start going to Wal Mart, grocery store and even school! You have to be FEVER FREE for 48 hours before you can return to school or work after having the flu. Children should NOT BE SENT TO SCHOOL WITH FEVER. PERIOD!!
Parents need to use some common sense. If you have sick kids LEAVE THEM AT HOME!! Don't take them to the school's Open House, don't take them to the store, keep their hands washed, etc. It isn't THAT hard to do!!

tbintroy, I wondered the same thing! This article is a pitiful example of someone who is 1) clearly not paying 100% attention at a meeting and/or 2) just writing "something" to get her job done quickly.
The information that Dr. Felton-Smith gave about AYP was given in such great detail and should have been the focus of this article. Of course, the Messenger already did the story about how TES and CHHS didn't make AYP and made the whole system look like it failed. This was a perfect opportunity for this reporter to TELL THE REAL STORY about AYP!! You have to look at the WHOLE picture when judging a school who didn't make AYP. TES was short in math with Special Education students. ALL OTHER sub-groups made AYP and in fact, exceeded the minimum percentages by leaps and bounds!! The school board has filed an appeal on the scores from CHHS because after the results were double checked, there were errors made that could have caused a "false-fail." Dr. Felton-Smith anticipates that when the appeal is completed, CHHS will have a positive result and will have made AYP in all areas!! CHMS not only made AYP in every area but the students exceeded the minimum requirement by 20 percentage points in some sub-groups!
She also could have reported on the fact that our system not only operates on a balanced budget each year, but how INCREDIBLY LOW our debt service is!! I wonder how many other systems and schools can report a debt service that is 3% of its total income? That is unheard of! Because of careful planning, saving and spending, our school system is FINANCIALLY SOUND and can and will dip into reserves if necessary to reverse the effects of proration. It would be interesting to compare all of the schools in our county to see how finacially sound they all are. I bet there would be some BIG surprises!
I have never been more proud to be a parent of Troy City School system! I plan to attend every school board meeting so I can get the REAL story first hand, because it is clear that the Messenger reporter isn't going to give us the all the FACTS!!

Bob Riley is one of the worst Governor's this state has ever seen. He needs to crack the whip on all the wasteful spending he and his staff does. The legislature needs to do the same. Last year, on TU's homecoming, Riley fired up a State jet to fly to Auburn to crown their homecoming queen, then hopped in it and flew to Troy to crown ours. It is RIDICULOUS how this state wastes money, yet takes it away from the PROGRAMS THAT NEED IT. Ground the jets and quit taking money away from the schools!!
Alabama needs to put a Governor is office who cares about the FUTURE OF THIS STATE--the children! His priorities are NOT IN ORDER.

The Troy City School system superintendent should be held responsible for this short fall. She is OVERLY consumed with stopping high school age kids from dropping out when she needs to be focusing on EARLY INTERVENTION IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS!! Why do kids drop out in high school? The EXACT groups of kids who didn't make AYP are the ones who will be the future dropouts. Why is that? Because they aren't getting the special services they need to excel! With free and reduced lunch, the problems usually stem from lack of parental support. The school system needs to quit focusing on 9-12 grade kids and put the focus BACK IN THE COMMUNITY WHO NEEDS THE HELP!! Early intervention teams are DESPERATELY needed at TES!! Team that will go into a home and help a parent help a child! We have children with UNDIAGNOSED learning disabilities and those kids need the EARLY INTERVENTION! I work with these "troubled teens"--the ones most likely to drop out. Almost every single one of them has an UNDIAGNOSED learning disability!! Kids with undiagnosed learning disabilities are prone to lack confidence in their abilities which leads to boredom and then acting out with bad behavior. It is tragic that these kids seem to fall through the cracks because OUR SUPERINTENDENT IS TOO CONCERNED WITH STATISTICS THAN THE CHILDREN!! All she is concerned with is the dropout percentage!!
It is time for ALL PARENTS, free and reduced lunch, fully paying lunch, black, white, Asian, Indian--EVERY PARENT IN THIS SCHOOL SYSTEM NEEDS TO DEMAND CHANGE!!

It would have been nice to know that the superintendent's position was up for renewal. I know MANY citizens--parents and grandparents of Troy City School students--who would have loved the opportunity to pitch for a NEW one! It was TIME FOR A CHANGE and we didn't even get the chance to advocate for it!
You better believe this time in 3 years, we will put up the fight!!
