If you read the article again you will see that he said he has been with the DA's office for five and half years. So if you think back that far you will know that the person who left was not from Pike county but Coffee county.

And there was nothing in the article that lead me to believe he assumed it was a female. I assumed that in the course of their conversation he was told who was leaving and that Judge was going to need a replacement Asst. DA.

No one can take Howard home because he won't allow anyone to get near enough to touch him.

Sorry but Howard can't cosign on a loan with you because he doesn't have a job so his credit is whack. That's why he's living on the streets.

Fox I can't understand why you are so stuck on the fact that it was only $5000. The amount he took does not matter. What matters here is that he took something that did not belong to him and he used the threat of a weapon to get the money.
It would not matter if he only took $1, if he used force or the threat of force then it's all the same to me.
If there had been more money in the drawer he probably would have taken more. If $5000 is all that is there that is all he can get.
And during a bank robbery, if they tell you they have a gun you treat the situation as if they do. So the fear is all the same. It doesn't change your fear level later when you find out they didn't have a gun or the amount of money they took. All you know is that someone came in and took something you were responsible for and they used the threat of harm against you and your coworkers. And that one wrong move on your part could cost someone their lives. I don't care how much he took, what he took was not his to take. And judging by his past he was only going to contiue to rob and steal until someone stopped him. And he would continue to take more and more risks until someone was actually hurt or killed.

To me it doesn't matter the amount of money he stole. What matters is that he made a threat, I have a gun. And at any time he could have used it. It doesn't matter if he really had a gun or not, he made a threat that he did have one.

The tellers lives are changed forever by his choices. And it was not a crime he commited once.
From what I heard he had commited the same crime in FL. I'm not sure if that is true or not though. But regardless if it is or not he was a career criminal and would continue to commit crimes if he had not been caught.
TPD deserves a huge pat on the back for solving this crime.

This was great work by the bank employees. It gets harder and harder to catch these crooks with all the technology today. You really have to be on your toes.
If the teller or cashiers asks for your id it's not an insult, it's to protect you. Checking our id's is the quickest way for them to verify we are who we say we are. And removing your hat, sun glasses and hanging up the cell phone helps them to be able to know who they are doing business with. Not to mention good manners.
Every crook they are able to hinder saves all of us money.

I'm sure those two inocent children pleaded for a lesser sentence from Tolbert. But they too got a life sentence. I pray that God watches over them and comforts them.

Ok, my post seems a little out of line with the current posts. Sorry, I typed it and thought I clicked on post. I went outside and when I came back I noticed it had not been sent. Please forgive me for changing the subject.

Wow, I read the posts before leaving work and it seemed everyone was willing to play nice. Then I come back this evening and it's back on again. Some people(Rob) just can't leave well enough alone.
Turtle I admire you, in all your pain you were the first one to apologize. To me that shows you are a person of great character. It takes a person with a big heart to offer an olive branch while being attacked.
When I first posted on this forum I was attacked and called names just because I had a difference of opinion and happened to misspell a word or two. I was even accused of being Troll. At the time I didn't understand why everyone was so against this person since I had not been reading the forum.
So I backed off feeling that this was not the place to be able to post my opinion and be treated with respect regardless if I was right or wrong. I have always believed that as people discuss their different ideas on a subject they both learn and grow from their differences. But there seems to be select few(or one who pretends to be a few) whose main goal in posting is to prevent anyone from learning from the others here.
This person, or people, seem to be filled with so much unhappiness that the only way for them to feel better is to make everyone around them unhappy also.
All I ask here is to be allowed to give my opinion, have you explain to me why you feel I am wrong and allow me the same opportunity, without being belittled and ridculed. We may never fully agree but if we attack each other no one really listens and no one learns either.
The ones who are here that feel they have nothing to learn or anything to teach are only here to prevent us from growing and don't deserve to be heard.
So I ask that you find another fourm to make your posts since I am here to learn.

Turtle, I am very sorry for your families tragic loss. The incident you describe is horrible and breaks my heart.

We all want our loved ones treated with the utmost respect during such a difficult time and lying by the side of the road for any length of time is hard on the family. We all know how people love to rubber-neck at accidents. And this only adds to the families despair.

I mean you or your family no disrespect, but I have known Jerry for many years and have even been with him on occasions when he had to leave on a call and this just does not sound like the Jerry I know. I'm not saying it didn't happen just as you have said, I'm just saying it is hard for me to see Jerry acting in such a way.

Having said that, if Jerry did refuse to come to the scene then he owes you and your family a full explanation and apology.

In years past I have witnessed Jerry with families of lost loved ones and he has always been caring and respectful. That is why it is hard for me to understand his refusal.

Soldier, you state that Jerry has not been given an opportunity to give his side of the story. Well he has the same opportunity that we have to join this forum. And he was given the opportunity to explain his position with this article. But personally I think the only ones he owes an explanation to in this incident is Turtle's family.

RobRoy, you state that you know what happened that night? Is that because you were there or is it just because someone told you? Even if you were there you still would not have the same view that the family did and I pray that you never do. Everyone's prospective of what happened will be different and you can't expect that your's would be the same as a grieving family.

I still respect Jerry and know that he has given greatly to this community. He has served with respect and honor and deserves to be reimbursed for his expenses. The whole gist of the article is that he serves without income, but he does need to be able to break even. If my calculations are right he is spending anywhere from $2000.04-3200.04 each year out of his pocket and has for many years.

So my question to you is why do you feel that this is fair? Even if you feel the position is a joke why would you think anyone who holds this position should pay to do so? He is not complaining about the hours or conditions he has to work or even about the time he lost with his family. He is asking that his service to this community be respected and not a liability to him and his family.

I have known Jerry for a number of years and he has always been a dedicated coroner for Pike County. He not only has served 24 years as coroner but was the assistant to the coroner before that.
DirtRoad you state that he has no medical experience but I beg to differ with you on that. No, he does not have a medical degree but that does not mean he has no medical knowledge at all. And the coroner before him also did not have a medical degree. But the lack of a degree doesn't mean that they are unable to do the job. And why would the Messenger include in the article that he is the chairman of the Democratic Party? What does that have to do with the fact that he has not had a raise in 24 years? Would you continue to work for someone without a raise for that many years? He does it because he cares about the people of Pike County and wants to insure that Heaven forbid something happens to any of us that we are treated with respect.
He understands that this is not a job for everyone, so he continues to do it because no one else has stepped up for the job.
Turtle I am truly sorry that your relative lost his life but knowing Jerry the way I do I just can't believe he would just not show. There has to be more to this story - what was the reason given that he didn't show?
And Elvis2 the coroner does not investigate murders so he has nothing to do with unsolved murders in Pike County.
And OldCamp if you think buying out of town is going to hurt the commissioners think again. It will solve nothing but will sure hurt the business owner who are trying to make a living and support their families. And to me THATS NOT COOL!!!!
And last, where Jerry lives has nothing to do with the service he provides for Troy. He and his wife have worked hard for what they have and have every reason to be proud of it. What he is asking for is that the pay be increased after 24 years to enable him to be able to cover his expenses. Not to pad his pockets but just to break even!
