Local grocery stores are having a run on black-eyed peas and collard and turnip greens. From left, Fannie Wambles, Pauline Conner and Carolyn Peavy of Ariton were shopping for the New Year’s Day foods Tuesday and picked up a package or two of hog jowl for added flavor. Landon Bassett is a member of the younger generation but he, too, follows the Southern tradition of blackeyed-peas and greens on New Year’s. None of them admitted to being superstition, rather just following an old Southern tradition.
