Bow Wow Pow Wow Saturday

Published Thursday, September 24, 2009

Saturday will be a good day for dogs.

For, if history repeats itself, at day’s end, 10 shelter dogs will have a new home and someone to love and care for them.

The Pike Animal Shelter will host its quarterly Bow Wow Pow Wow Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the grassy lot between Sears and KFC on Highway 231 in Troy.

The public is invited to join the shelter volunteers for hotdogs and soft drinks, learn more about the organization and spend a little becoming acquainted with some of the most lovable shelter dogs anywhere around.

“We’ll bring out the Troy Animal Shelter dogs that are available for adoption,” said Donna Schubert, Founders Society chair. “The Bow Wow Bow Wows are so important because they provide opportunities for those who are looking for a good family dog to see what is available at the shelter.

“The quarterly Bow Wow Pow Wows have been very successful in that we average about 10 adoptions at each. And, it’s a good day, even for those dogs that go back to the shelter because they all get a bath, a bandana, flea medicine and some loving. And, we all have a good time playing with them. So, it’s a good day for the shelter dogs.”

As of Monday, the Troy Animal Shelter was operating a capacity and most of the dogs are adults.

“Anyone who is looking for a dog that is passed the chewing everything up and running everywhere phase will be interested in these dogs,” Schubert said.

“Their personality is there and you’ll know their ultimate size and, it’s not true that old dogs can’t learn new tricks. They can.”

Schubert cited on situation where a volunteer took an adult shelter dog home and, in no time, had it trained to the crate and to the leash.

“Adult dogs can be trained just like puppies, if that’s important to the family,” she said.

A couple of shelter dogs that will be up for adoption on Saturday are mountain curs.

“Those are flop-eared, short-haired dogs of medium size,” Schubert said. “There will also be several lab mixes and terrier mixes. And, there’s this one little short-haired border collie that would make a very good family dog.”

And, then there’s Tucker.

“Tucker is a bulldog mix and he’s been at the shelter for quite a while,” Schubert said.

“He’s a super nice fellow.”

All of the shelter dogs now have been vaccinated against kennel cough, thanks to a Pet Finder grant.

“Pet Finder is the Pike Animal Shelter’s online website that posts photographs and bios of the dogs at the Troy Animal Shelter,” Schubert said. “We were awarded a grant that makes it possible for us to vaccinate for this disease that is very contagious, especially when animal are kept in close quarters like kennels.”

There is no adoption fee required when adopting a shelter dog offered through the Bow Wow Pow Wow but those adopting are required to sign an agreement that they will have the dog spayed or neutered.

The Sept. 26 Bow Wow Pow Wow will also be a good opportunity for animal lovers to learn more about the Troy Animal Shelter’s Fur Fest coming up Nov. 14 and other upcoming events that will benefit abandoned, abused and neglected animals in Pike County.

I think the shelter certainly has the right idea to help these animals get adopted by bringing the shelter TO people and not depend on people going to the shelter.

There is also a message that if everyone that owns a dog or cat got their pets neutered or spayed...there would be perhaps a lot less orphaned animals.

I hope Saturday's event will be successful.

And remember oldhog, women love a man that does housework. Just go up to a pretty lady at the bar and say "How about those swiffers?" and you'll be swarmed within minutes.
