Escapee seized in Goshen

Crenshaw County convict search ends in surrender

Published Saturday, September 12, 2009

The search for an escaped Crenshaw County convict ended in Goshen Friday in a “peaceful surrender.”

Jeremy Baggett, 28, had been on the run since early Wednesday morning, when he fled the Crenshaw County Jail, and had last been seen heading toward Goshen late Thursday.

The search drew into Pike County Thursday night but was called off due to weather.

Law enforcement continued their pursuits Friday morning, after relatives of Baggett notified officers he had been in their home.

“A couple left their trailer, and he had been in their home between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m.,” said Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas. “They said they noticed he came and took camouflage pants, a shirt and shoes.”

Thomas said the Department of Corrections K-9 Unit was able to track Baggett’s scent all through the morning, but it seemed he was about three hours ahead of law enforcement.

The canines were able to track Baggett’s scent until they reached a pond near the trailer, where some of his clothes were found.

Plaid boxers and a wet sheet were retrieved from law enforcement, and the boxers matched those that he was wearing at the time he escaped.

“It could have been where he changed clothes because we didn’t find those clothes in the home,” Thomas said.

Officers called a helicopter and a thermal camera, with hopes they might find Baggett hiding in the pond but were unsuccessful.

The search was ultimately called off around 4 p.m.

That is, until Thomas received a call Friday night from Baggett’s relatives that he had returned.

“Family and friends contacted me, and I went to their residence, and he peacefully surrendered,” Thomas said. “I appreciate their cooperation.”

Baggett has been taken to the Pike County Jail, where Thomas said he will likely have another escape first-degree charge.

Prior to his escape, Baggett was being held in the Crenshaw County Jail on charges of burglary, domestic violence and criminal mischief. He also had an escape first-degree charge from when he escaped the jail in July.

The chase lasted for days, something Crenshaw County Deputy Ronnie White said happened because of Baggett’s lack of fear.

“He’s been staying in rivers, staying in ponds, and we thought he was in the swamp one night,” White said. “He’s doing stuff a normal person wouldn’t do. He’s just not afraid of anything.”

The Pike and Crenshaw Counties Sheriff’s Departments were assisted by the DOC, Alabama Department of Public Safety, Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Luverne Police Department, Dale County Sheriff’s Department and the Troy Police Department.

i'm so glad he was caught before anybody got hurt. i'm sure it was a hard thing for his family to have to do to turn him in but they did the right thing. law enforcement is right when they say he's not scared of anything. he's crazy and see's no fear. the boy needs the kind of help that noone on this earth can give him. only God can help him. it was very surprising to me though that he surrendered peacefully. he must not have known his family called the law or he would have ran again. i appreciate all the hard work and long hours to all those involved that were out searching for him. i also appreciate his family for doing the right thing before somebody got hurt. maybe he won't escape again.

Can't believe he got away from those tracking dogs in the swamp. Probably hurt those dogs feelings. Somebody call PETA and have them let him out so we can have a rematch.

Yes I agree. It had to be hard for relatives to call the police. It was the best decision that anyone could have made under those circustances and I have a lot of respect for the Baggett relatives that did the right thing...plus (and I am certain) they helped defuse an otherwise nasty apprehension.

If this is the 2nd escape you can bet he'll try for a 3rd. Remember the line in that song, 'the country boy will survive', so be ready for anything when he runs again.

I would like to say thanks to everyone who helped in the search for Baggett. This individual is smarter than everyone thinks. He may be categorized as being crazy.. but this man is smart..(Manson Smart) People have the right to their own opinions, but I know this individual was up to no good. He has Hurt someone before.. bad enough to have them hospitalized, and he would have done it again. I don't know what was said or done to make this individual "surrender" like they say he did, but it just doesn't make any sense. I'm just glad that he is back behind bars where he can't hurt anyone else, or even himself for that matter.

This man is 'Manson smart'? Is domestic violence, criminal mischief and escape from jail even remotely the same as promoting a cult of impressionable young people under the influence of LSD to start a race war by murdering rich white people and framing blacks for it? - And if the 'boy sees no fear', Why did he escape in the first place? He's sane enough to dread jail. Which, to me, seems like a good start for rehabilitation.

Just my opinion but....I doubt very much this man can be re habilitated. He's 28 with a history of crime and incarceration already under his belt because that is what he chose to do. I doubt anyone twisted his arm to do the things he did.

Cop24 said "Manson Smart" not relating to the murders Manson is blamed for promoting....but the cunningness of the man behind the planning of those horrid crimes...is the way I perceived what he said.

Bamabunny,

Thats exactly what I meant when I said "Manson Smart". I know this individual personally and I have known him almost all my life. The guy is smart. Smart enough to figure out ways to slip out of jail and ways to outsmart while we were chasing him. So, yes he is smart.. But he is also crazy at the same time... traveling on foot the whole time through snake infested swamps and woods, walking through things a normal person wouldn't dare think about. What i meant was "Manson Smart" in his sense of planning.

I will say this though...there is no way I would be going through snake infested swamps and woods......running or not running from the law.

I seem to remember a few years back...an escapee that finally gave up because he was also in the woods and could no longer contend with the elements. He was riddled with bug bites....cuts and sores. I can't even stand the bugs buzzing around the yard when I'm out there working...much less dodging snakes.

cop24- yes this individual was very dangerous. i also know this boy and seen the after math of his destruction and yes he is crazy but crazy smart and thats the scary part. i know for a fact he was up to no good. he was out to hurt everyone he felt had crossed him and he felt had done him wrong. his plan was to do that before he got caught and cause law enforcement to have to kill him to stop him. that was his plan. let's pray he don't find a way to get loose again but the old saying is what happens twice happens 3 times. i hope thats all it is, is just a saying. for those who say it sounds like he could use rehabilitation let me tell you he has been in rehabilitation many times but the words out of his own mouth was i'll never change. yea he dreads jail but not enough to serve his time and get out instead of escaping not once but twice and buying himself a whole lot more time not just in jail now but prison. they called it domestic violence but it was almost murder and thats all i'll say about that. read between the lines. i hope and pray there is no next time but if there ever is be aware cause crazy smart is just what he is and they are the most dangerous out of anybody. he puts me in mind of the guy in the saw movies that's behind all the killings. in other words baggett has the mind to be a mastermind behind any crime.

Cop24 and concerned4u....

This guy is sounding more and more scary every minute.

I am really glad he was caught!

you have leg chains thay could be put on him even in jail. The law does not always right in what they do. If that don't work, chaim him up and don't let him out of his cell.

"What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. And I don't like it any more than you men. "--Captain, Road Prison 36.
--
It seems to me that this guy looks at escaping from jail as some way to get his kicks. The crimes he was in jail for didn't seem to be the type to put him away for very long. He just wants to escape to show everyone how smart he is. But I know one thing. If you want to get away from those thermal cameras, you have to cover yourself in mud and udder the following line in a heavy Austrian accent: "Your one ugly ****** ******," just like Arnold did in that movie "Predator"

When in Goshen one "udders" instead of "utters." Something about the heavy cow population or something.

Gotcha!

Escaping like he did in my opinion was to show people that he "could" if he wanted to.

I'm sure that the jail has taken measures to prevent this from happening gain. I sure hope so anyway.

Granted, the guy has the look of an insane criminal degenerate down in all of his photos. Which is why my advice to all people arrested is to smile; not too big, not too wide, not too cheesy, but smile in your booking snapshot! If your hands are free, give a thumbs up. Dangerous people never use that gesture and it lets everyone know you're OK. - A bit of a dork, but trustworthy and not too much of a risk. - A sad, gloomy, depressed face works too if you can pull off looking like a sad 5 year old, but most of us can't. So, just smile! It doesn't hurt.

Now I am REALLY glad he was caught!

It baffles the mind that some people found guilty of a crime and sent to prison...think of ways to "get even" with the person or witness that perhaps convinced a jury of his/her guilt. That's all they think about is when they get out what they are going to do to even the odds.

However....they do not think about the fact that if they had not committed the crime to begin with....they would not be sitting in jail/prison.

i am really shocked to see what type of person he turned out to be. i really am after hearing all of these stories bc about 10 years ago we went to church together and he never once seem anything like these descriptions im hearing. as a matter of fact about 5 months ago i saw him and his wife and we talked for awhile and he still seemed like the same friendly goofy jeremy from 10 years ago. guess the sayin is true....u may never really know someone regardless of how long you have known them....it just really amazes me...i hate it....

I have know this guy since he was a baby..he may be hard-headed and a lot of other things, but he is not dangerous. The people who turned him in to Pike Co. are friends, not family, and he asked them to call. They knew he was not dangerous..He was a good worker too. He got on drugs a long time ago and can't stay away from them..he desperately needs mandatory rehab away from here..cop24
maybe doesn't know the full story. The domestic violence charge comes because his druggie wife came in and told him she slept with his friend...cop24 might have done the same thing he did..granted, he should not have escaped or even tried..Crenshaw Co. could've done the same as Pike Co. did without all the hoop-lolly..but they like a big chase scene anyway..makes you wonder if they didn't just let him escape so they could chase him..

Posted by concerned4u (anonymous) on September 15, 2009 at 10:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

reality 1-you're saying baggett was addicted to drugs but you want to call his wife a druggie. i don't get it. were you there the night of the domestic violence to see what happened or are you going on hear say? it takes a weak low life pathetic man to lay a hand on a woman no matter what the reason is behind it. baggett has also been in mandatory rehab not around here and his exact words were i'll never change. baggett gets his kicks out of trying to outsmart the law and then laughs about it when they catch him. he don't realize it's buying him more time in the pen everytime he escapes. we are all entitled to our own opinion and to me its goes alot deeper with baggett than just being hard headed. my opinion is he is a very dangerous person under the right circumstances and the influence of drugs and alcohol.

concerned4u-I know Jeremy needs help and I know for a fact he was in rehab away from here, I also know the same people that turned him in are the same people who went and signed him out of rehab claiming to be his parents..his parents would not sign him out..You don't live with a druggie or stay with one if you don't do drugs..I do know his parents begged the court and the sheriff do make rehab mandatory and they wouldn't...and you are right about one thing..anyone would be dangerous under the right circumstances..even a cop...
