President’s speech stayed in safe zone
Published Wednesday, September 9, 2009
Newt Gingrich approved of the speech. That’s fair praise from a conservative who has plenty of criticism for President Barack Obama.
Yet, on Tuesday, Gingrich was quoted as defended the president’s controversial speech to school children across America, going so far as urging all students to read the text of the speech delivered on Tuesday.
“It’s a good speech,” Gingrich added. “I recommend it to everybody if you have any doubts. I would love to have every child in America read it, think about it, and learn that they should stay in school and they should study.”
Gingrich’s remarks are a calm, fair voice in the partisan politics that gripped the nation before the President’s speech. In the day’s leading up to the speech, nervous parents fueled by conservative groups worried that the President would use the forum of speaking directly to school children to spread his political platform, a concern given credibility by the White House’s bungling of the situation and development of lesson plans to help children think about “what I can do to help the president.”
Instead, the president urged children to stay in school; to find something at which they excel; and to realize that while they might not like every teacher or every subject, they need to stay focused on the long-term goal of getting a good education.
That’s good advice, no matter which side of the aisle you occupy.
Now, if the President could simply find middle ground and avoid the political partisanship in his work with Congress to develop a national health care plan, we could teach our school children a real-life lesson about the effectiveness of democracy.

If you think this President is for all the people, you are wrong. And Americans are seeing exactly who this man is and what his agenda is more and more every day. The people that objected to his speech were the ones that had heard about the instructions given with the speech to children. We have woken up..gotten smarter..started asking questions. I have been watching shows that I always liked on T.v. and really started paying attention to what the underlying message is..reading my grandson's literature book..and the message there.
There should be NO compromise..the President has drawn the line in the sand and we need to do the same. The compromise is what got us into this mess already..we've spent years trying to placate and compromise with people that quite frankly hate us because of the color of our skin..

I,m White and he doesn't scare me. He's a black man that was smart enough to get himself elected President. From what I see everyday that would make him a near genious. The man gave a speach about working hard and staying in school and a lot of my fellow conservative southern friends acted as if it was an assault on their children. Its amazing to me that the middle class falls and continues to be suckered by the Republicans message of fear. That is the only thing I hear coming from the party that represents only a small percentage of our society, (the rich and cooperate america). Give the President and this party a chance. The same chance you gave to George and Dick. The team that said they would make the rich, richer and it would trickle down to the rest of us. Look where that got us.

I have no fault with him being, white, black, green or purple..that is what the radicals use to silence people..racism..and the fear of being called a racist if you question or disagree with this President's polices. I am not afraid of being called a racist..I have been called worse. There is an assault being made in our schools and t.v. against our children..white guilt..and if you are saying it is not..then you either blind, deaf, or purposefully turning a blind eye because you are afraid of offending.
"George and Dick" didn't have the "trickle down economics" that was Ronald Reagan who I also thought was a scary person. That was the other radicals...the "greed is good" people..
I don't like either party at this time..distrust BOTH political parties..as the guy says.."I'm not an Independent..I am independent."

Blue I feel your pain but I'm not afraid of offending no one. If you thought Ronald Reagan was a scary person then "Goerge and Dick" should have placed you in cardiac arrest. You said we are hated for our skin color and if you believe that, then it would be a natural human response not to like this President. Nor do I agree with you, that there is an assault on our children in our schools and on t.v.. I also have loved ones in the public school system. Over the last eight year I have witnessed an assault on the working class by big buisnees and a Republican administration that flooded our courts with anti-labor / pro-buisness federal judges. I don't trust either party myself, but I do think we should at least support the President and give him a chance. Got to go...Think i'm going to start a coalition to ban Fox News.

The Health Care debate, in a nutshell: I Am My Brother's Keeper vs FORGET YOU, GOT MINE. This is the polite company, family hour version. ; )

Great speech for the kids. As for the moron from South Carolina, consider the source. This is from the same state that has a huge problem with the Gov!

I'm SICK of being called racist, because I don't agree with Obama. I could care less what his race was, as long as he does his job as the President of the United States. So far, all he's done is put us into further debt, and aim to ruin our Health Care. In his speech, Obama LIED to the USA about the health care covering illegal aliens. Research it if you don't believe me, but Obama said that the Health Care wouldn't cover illegals. That was a lie! And now, people are demanding that he apologize for his farce facts.
It's sad that people in my own school don't seem to understand what's going on in today's society. Some of my fellow classmates had NO IDEA what the Health Care reformity was about! Half of them didn't know what socialism or communism was! Rather than focusing on our "character" each month, our school (CHHS) should be informing us on pressing issues, and important current events! The students these days are misinformed, and Helms is so afraid that he's going to offend students/parents, that he is watering down the truth, and not telling us about things that we should know about.
My generation is the future! So far, it's looking pretty dim.

BenoskieJ, I'm not sure what info you have that proves the president lied about illegals being covered in the preposed health care plan since you didn't provide any proof. Would love to see what info you have and where you got it.
See below for the part of the bill in question that proves the president wasn't lying and Joe Wilson was wrong for accusing him of such. I'm sure it will do little to persuade you or others of the facts, since you sound like you don't want to be convinced of the truth.
The House bill contains a section (Sec. 246) titled "NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS," which states: "Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States."
