Walking trail closer to completion

Published Wednesday, October 21, 2009

RYAN CHARLES

After years of discussion over building a new walking trail in the city of Troy, the project is at last coming to fruition.

Construction is set to begin on the walking trail at the Troy Sportsplex and reach completion within three weeks, said Troy Recreation Department Director Dan Smith.

“The contractor J.B. Evans has his equipment on site and the trail’s been staked off by the surveyor,” Smith said. “ I’m expecting it to be complete in two to three months.”

The trail, which will be approximately two miles long, will include a single mile of paved path 8 feet wide, which will wind through the wooded area behind the sportsplex.

“I drove the trail a few times in an ATV, and it’s absolutely beautiful down there,” Smith said. “This is going is going to be an excellent feature. We’re also looking forward to securing future grants so it will eventually be over three miles.”

Once the trail is complete, Smith said it will be available for walkers, joggers or bikers.

The project will require a $20,000 match from the city of Troy and will be primarily funded by a $100,000 grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

I don't understand why this was needed. Troy has had a very nice 2.5 mile walking trail through 75 acres of woods at the Arboretum for many years and anybody can use it. It even has identification markers for local flora and a 4 acre pond.

.."I don't understand why this was needed."..

"Because the money was available so let's spend it" Alabama mentality.

It's so far out that it'll be to expensive to drive out there daily. Will they charge for someone to use it like they do everything else at the sportsplex?

I agree that it is far out possibly for people who live on the north side of town or the county to use but it could be of benefit to people south of the bypass.

It really amazes me how this city is ALWAYS talking about "our kids this...our kids that"...a city that ALWAYS say that the well being of our kids are top priority.

"The project will require a $20,000 match from the city of Troy..."

I can't believe this city would actually come up with money for a walking trail that may or may not be used on a regular basis, on the same property that has an inside track for walking and don't take the time out to complete an application for a Safe Routes to School program for our kids to walk and bike to school. WHICH, might I add, required NO MATCHING MONEY. IT'S 100% FUNDED!

Yeah, that was smart!

While this is a pretty great addition to the sportsplex, it really isn't needed. The University alone has plenty of sidewalks and beautiful scenery for everyone to enjoy, especially at this time of year.

Instead of a safe walk/bike route to school..How about a bus system? Is that too much to ask? Or how about changing the distance between the 3 schools. Turn the middle school into something else and let that be the High School stadium, just with better bleechers.

Never mention busing in Troy. It means more money spent on transportation and less on education. We are very fortunate in the system we have. Either carpool or walk. By the way, I think the walking trail is great. As for the arboretum trail, it is almost always impassable.

What about security? I used to live near a 3 mile trail in Dothan and it was FREAKNIK after dark. I wish that they would turn some of that land behind the Sportsplex into a short part 3 golf course like the "Back Nine" in Montgomery. It could have a driving range and lights for night games.
