Police capture wanted man

Published Tuesday, October 20, 2009

After weeks of search, Troy Police have arrested an Ariton man alleged to have robbed a local convenient store earlier this month.

Bryan Bertona, 20, has been taken into custody and faces charges of robbery third degree. Bertona is suspected to have robbed a Beeline gas station unarmed at the intersection of Sanders Road and U.S. Highway 231 on Oct. 3. Police issued a warrant for Bertona’s arrest after he was believed to have been the robber, and thanks to the help of the public, Bertona was apprehended Monday evening, said Troy Police Spokesman Sgt. Benny Scarbrough.

“Police received a call that a subject matching the description of the picture of Bertona recently printed in the Troy Messenger was spotted,” Scarbrough said. Bertona was seen in the parking lot of Krystal on U.S. Highway 231 at 5:19 p.m. Monday, Scarbrough said.

After arrival, police investigation confirmed Bertona’s identity, and he was taken into custody without incident. Bertona was transported to the Troy Police Department and later to the Pike County Jail.

“We appreciate the assistance of those individuals who called and let us know about the subject and location,” Scarbrough said.

The Beeline store is convenient but it is known as a convenience store.

That's wonderful news!! Maybe this will encourage The Messenger to post ALL pictures of wanted criminals, when posting a story...you never know how much it could help assist our law enforcement in finding them!!

The Police Department does not issue warrants...officers may sign affidavits or complaints but the issuing of warrants is the province of the court through its clerks or magistrates. An arrest warrant is an order from the court directing officers to arrest a person and deliver that person to the court.

Another pet peeve is the matter of robbery vs burglary or larceny. An unoccupied building cannot be robbed - it can be burglarized; property can be stolen but cannot be robbed. Robbery requires that a person be present and deprived of property by force or threat of force.

Troy messenger is so biased. I knew of this robbery before they ever posted. I work in a convenience store so I knew of this store the same night it was robbed. That tells you that the newspaper dont post everything that happens in town.
