What is this?
Was Obama's prize based on potential?
Published Friday, October 9, 2009
Shocking. Surprising. Unexpected. That’s how analysts and even the general public reacted to news Friday that President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
And that’s a fair reaction.
The prize, typically awarded for an individual’s body of work in contribution to world peace, was awarded to an American president with little to no track record in the world stage. In fact, nominations for the prize were closed a mere two weeks after he took office earlier this year.
There is no great feat in Obama’s resume – no Mideast peace treaty; no sweeping humanitarian reforms, at home or abroad; no unilateral disarmament on a world stage; no greening of the country or the world; no ... well, no real works of any kind. Just words, and perhaps empty promises and hope.
And maybe that’s what the committee voting for the Nobel Prize considered when they awarded this year’s peace prize. Maybe they were, as some have suggested, offering recognition for the potential that lies ahead; for the promise and hope that the world seems to think this president, this one man, brings.
Or, maybe as those more cynical would say, the committee is enamoured with the fact that he is anyone but George Bush and is celebrating that accomplishment.
Whichever the cause, we think it’s a mystifing choice. We certainly recognize President Obama’s potential to have great impact on our nation and our world but we believe time, and history, will tell how effective he will be.
Meanwhile, we believe there are dozens of others out there who are doing real and lasting work to bring about peace on a global scale whose efforts certainly deserve recognition and reward ... for the accomplishments already taking place.

I only want what I earn- nothing more!
I would be embarassed to accept such a prize without having completed the tasks involved in deserving such recognition.
To quote Rev. James David Manning, This guy is nothing more than a “long-legged Mack Daddy”. I may change my mind when he actually accomplishes something.

Peace Prize for anyone who could take out right wingers like Goerge and Dick. Well deserved, Congats to the President. Most Americans are proud of this award for our President and I'm one southern white male conservative that is proud as well.

This news sure shocked me. The man was in the Senate for 147 days when he decided to run for President...11 days as President when he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize....and as far as I can see the only thing he has done is spend the tax payer's money.
I sure have not seen anything that he has done towards "world peace" to even be nominated.
Maybe when he apologized to the world on behalf of all Americans for being "American"....that put him over the top. Who knows.

Perhaps the previous winners who actually had to accomplish something should just return their prize in protest.

Now why would people be upset about our President winning the Nobel Peace Prize??? Man, this has got me puzzled?? Just can't figure this out??? DUHHH!!!!! My fellow caucasion brothers and sisters do not be afraid as fear leads to failure. Stupidity failed us the last eight years, and now fear is our enemy. If Obama was white would this bother you as much. I promise you I'm no liberal but right wingers are far more dangerous...(Now on the other hand)If Obama ties the hands of our military in Afghanistan as I fear he is doing then I will join my fellow southern conservatives and come around to your way of thinking. I pray that our President did not delay 40,000 soldiers that our Field Commander in Afghanistan has requested asap becouse he knew he was up for the Nobel. If that is the case then look for the Taliban to take over Afghanistan after another Vietnam type debacle. Where we fight reactive(police action) instead of proactive(military action) and failure is assured. (By the way the Nobel voters see Obama reaching out and trying to use an intelligent approach to world peace) "telling you man, after George and Dick anybody could look like a genuis"

What I see in many of the comments on Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize is a typical lack of knowledge and paying lip service to biases that will find anything negative where lack of knowlege prevails.
First of the all, the goal of the Peace Prize, as clearly stated in Nobel’s will, was that it should be awarded to whoever "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Notice that this states “work for promotion of peace.” Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which recognize completed accomplishments in science, literature, economics, etc., the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to those who are in the process of resolving a conflict or creating peace.
While Alfred Nobel never explained why there should be an award for peace (along with chemistry, physics, medicine, and literature; economics was added later), it is believed by many that he wanted to compensate for the destructiveness of the explosives he invented. This might have been influenced by his association with Bertha Von Suttner, an Austrian novelist and noted pacifist.
Today, the Peace Prize is basically given to reward efforts in the areas of arms control and disarmament, peace negotiation, democracy and human rights, other work for the purpose of creating a more peaceful world, and work to limit harmful impact on the environment.Along these lines, one cannot argue that Obama’s efforts to resolve conflict and to end the actual (as opposed to merely trumped-up to start a war) destructive and potential world annihilation of nuclear proliferation (be they rhetorical or actual) are without merit.
Many awardees of the prize have received it based on their “well intentioned plans and efforts.” Depending on how you view history (or the present), the awards given to Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Carter, King, Rabin, Peres, Arafat, Kissinger, Gorbachev, based on their plans and efforts, all generated controversy, particularly as to whether their goals have even been achieved to date. Most are still “works in progress.”
Of course, many well-deserving individuals have not received the Nobel Prize; neither did Jesus Christ, Buddha, or even some might argue, Bob Hope, receive it posthumously! We will probably never get around to rewarding everyone who has some good for humankind or even those who have done the most good in terms of peace. But, I am sure that the reward that they sought was not the Nobel Peace Prize, but PEACE itself. So we can all give the greatest honor to our peacemakers by being civil and peaceful ourselves.
Enough. Obama deserves the award. Make sure you voice your suggestions to your Congressional Representatives, University Presidents and Faculty, past Nobel Prize recipients, etc. on who you would like to see nominated next time. Until then – Get over it!

Yatta, I don't believe Rev. James David Manning or you (for quoting him) know what a "long-legged Mack-Daddy" is. To insult a person by person by assigning derogatory descriptors, is just that - an insult without merit.

He actually won the Nobel Piece prize - ie: he is going to take a big piece of what I work for and give it to illegal aliens + people that don't work and don't deserve it.
Clayton Bigsby should have won Nobel Peace prize.

I don't care if he is 3 feet tall, weighs 375 lbs and is pink with yellow polka-dots; he hadn't when he was nominated and still hasn't done anything other than get elected president of the US to win the honor.
His selection as winner does nothing but minimize the significance of everyone who has won before.

and to the person up there who asked would it be the same if he were white (which really sadly enough i was waiting on it..i knew SOMEONE would bring it up..that elephant in the room...) it would make no difference..i dont/wont support all his things that he deems necessary to spend my future childrens money on..

Thanks BeachGirl....
I always said that when he was elected....that I would respect him as our President unless he gave cause to lose that respect from me. He has done it over and over again at home and abroad and did not take long at all.
All I want to do is live a modest life as comfortable as possible and everything I planned for will fall into place. Well I retired early because I could....and now I am scared to death that I will lose everything through more taxes...no social security because the government gives it to people who have not worked for it and get a free ride at our expense....and it was not the government's money at all to begin with....it is ours!
This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Check the record on the history of the nobel peace prize. President Obama has demonstrated through his action the true meaning of peace, not for just a few but for the whole world. People need to get a life and deal with the more pressing issues impacting our great nation such as healthcare reform, unemployment, economy! If we would deal with these pressing issues that affect all of america, we would not have time debating why our president received the Nobel Peace Prize! This is an honor for all americans.

The last time this country saw true patriotism was after 9/11. Before that it was during WWII. After the terrorist attack in NY...people were up in arms demanding that the score be settled. Everyone was behind military action to finally after many years of wrist slapping....settle the score. After years of turning our backs to attacks...1983...1988...1993...1996...1998..2000 and the worst 2001...against the US and our military....we said "enough is enough!"
Slowly but surely the flags on cars diminished...people turned against our brave men and women fighting to preserve our rights and helping another nation get their rights back. There are groups of people demonstrating at military funerals trying to be as disruptive as possible calling our dead heroes horrid names with verbal attacks on the mothers and fathers trying to bury their sons and daughters.
I cannot remember once where the United States refused to send help or aid to various countries that have been in peril due to oppression and inhumanities or natural disasters...and we are usually first to arrive with all that we could give.
In 2001 we witnessed the first terrorist attack of monstrous proportions. We have never had anything like this breach our shores in CONUS. Thousands of lives gone...and for what reason? Innocent lives lost...and people that did nothing but board a plane....go to work or perhaps visit NYC to go sightseeing. All of those horrid attacks on innocent lives in the name of a religion that professes to be "God loving and peaceful".

cont'd.....
We have people protesting GITMO for the treatment of terrorists...that have killed their own people...cut off heads...cut off limbs and tortured numerous others in the name of religion. Our President wants to shut down GITMO and bring these animals inside of our United States....to name just one thing I do not like.
Our country is going down hill faster than we can comprehend......and it's not going to get better. We all need realize that no matter who...what or where...we need to back our military and take our country back...and let our President know that the White House belongs to the people...and he needs to listen to the people. Things cannot change over night and that is what he is trying to do. He also needs to stop and take a good look at some things he is doing that upset people like going to NY and a Broadway show in Air Force 1 that cost the tax payers over one million dollars....and doing so while spending the tax payer money. He needs to listen to his consultants as to what is appropriate and while out of the country. IE; giving the Queen of England a CD of his speeches...bowing to a Saudi Prince...apologizing for Americans being "American". How dare he do that! I will not apologize for being an American because I am proud to be an American!
We are still waiting for a legit birth certificate....because we won't settle for an altered birth certificate. he says he was born in Hawaii...his own grandmother says he was born in Kenya...because she was in the delivery room when he was born.
So until he bucks up....I remain unhappy.

I brought up the first Gulf War, because the second Gulf War was just an extension of that one. Bush sr. failed. He should have bucked harder and finished the job. He didn't, W did.
Now Pres Obama gets credit for ending it, maybe that's what he got the prize for. hmmmm.... I really can't imagine what else it might be for. No need grasping at straws for some explanations that just aren't there.

Do I think Pres. Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize? Cannot easily agree or dismiss it. What I do know is that he received it. The people who gave it to him must have seen something. I don't know if its based on your accomplishments or not but not everyone who received had accomplished something. Martin Luther King won the award in 1964 for promoting civil rights. He died in 1968 and hadn't accomplished what he promoted...like de-segregation. I know this to be true because my mother attended Hillcrest in Brundidge and the integration into PCHS didn't start until 1970. Later after his death his efforts were more recognized. People at that time had a different mindset about issues but the premise is still the same. Thinking back then was that equal rights for everyone was wrong, and today its healthcare for everyone is wrong. Barack hasn't accomplished anything because he has too much on his "plate", so to speak, brought on by his on fault of trying to find a common ground to please everyone, and you cannot do that and be successful in this country because we are to polarized, but he is putting forth an effort.

Some very interesting and valid points Bamaslick.
Being from the North I remember watching news reports from the South here back when kids were being bused to schools for the sole purpose of integration.
At 18 I remember driving through the Southern states here with my sister and actually seeing forms of discrimination....and thinking to myself...."I cannot imagine having basic freedoms denied." Simple freedoms denied like having separate water fountains....Rosa Park's choosing her seat instead of sitting in an assigned seat and being arrested for it.
I even remember pulling into a South Carolina Howard Johnson's restaurant parking lot to get something to eat. The windows were low and car tags could easily be seen. We were actually denied service because we were from NY. A drop in the bucket in comparison but it was a taste of discrimination.
What was visible to me at that time did not even touch the core of discrimination that actually took place then.
This country has come a long way but needs to go much further.

"In fact, nominations for the prize were closed a mere two weeks after he took office earlier this year."
So precisely what did he do in those two weeks that made him worthy of being nominated? If nothing, then what did he before that? Because anything he did after the nomination date had passed is moot.
Did they give a specific reason as to why he was nominated? With other Nobel awards, like physics for instance, they nominate people for specific accomplishments, not "just because".

That's what I've been asking regis. I agree with you....what has he done to even be nominated?
Posted by bamaslick (anonymous) on October 13, 2009 at 4:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I believe he was nominated for breaking a barrier which no one thought would ever broken, this soon anyway! (less than 50 yrs removed from the Civil Rights movement) Becoming president.
Ten yrs ago I would have never believed if you told me that a half-black/half-white hawaiian man would lead the US. Any man other white by that matter. Everyone knows America is a great land but we have our blemishes and race is one. We might not believe it but we are looked at a different way by other countries on our race relations. By becoming president of this nation, it should have promoted a greater peace within ourselves as a nation. Seems like all it has done is make us more polarized. I guess we really weren't ready.
This is why I believe he was nominated for the award. For once the world looked at us without contempt. Now since they have we throw it right back in their face about deserve. We don't deserve this land. We ought to give it back to the Native Americans who were swindled and forced off of it.

You know what Bamaslick? I pretty much agree with everything you said.
I did not vote for Obama because he was black though. It was because I felt he had no experience but for 147 days in the Senate....and no experience in foreign policy. He kept saying he was going to "change" things....and to change what he wanted to change took money...and a lot of it. The money had to come from somewhere....and that "somewhere" was from the tax payers. We are already taxed too much...and personally speaking I am sick of it.
I thought myself that we very well could be ready for a black President....but I just could not see that in Obama. If his ideas were not so radical to me...I probably would have voted for him.
When he is on tv....the look on his face at times seems to say "what did I get myself into??"...and that also scares me.
Posted by bamaslick (anonymous) on October 14, 2009 at 1:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
No one has experience being president. He could have been in the senate for 10 yrs and that wouldn't qualify him to become president. We had a dummy with experience before...we see how that worked out.
All change takes money. Look at what Troy is trying to do fix up the town. They are using grant money...but it will benefit Troy so much, later down the line!
The burdens of this country falls on the common (poor) man in this nation. Yes we are taxed enough, but poorly conceived ideas are the reasons we feel that we are overly taxed. So now, no matter who is in office and taxes are being suggested, we as Americans will react with anger...even though the ideas, I believe, will produce a better outcome.
I don't know about the radical ideas part...He really didn't say anything in his campaign (no candidate ever gives clear ideas). To me his ideas aren't radical...I think that the idea of black man in office that is Democrat, promotes the fear of Radical ideas. If he was Republican, i don't think his ideas would be that radical. He did a great job in not bending to radical ideas proposed by "Al Sharpton" in just being one-sided to help only "African Americans".
To me his expression exudes overconfidence...He is so comfortable with his ideas that it has transpired into arrogance, which might be his undoing. This is why he is pushing all these different agenda which are about to overwhelm him...which scares me!
I think everyone has a fear that is racially and sterotypically unsound. No matter your color?! If you do??...its okay! We have come a long way here but there stills a way to go. A fear that an intelluctally inferior Democratic Black Man is President. Its okay...We weren't ready!
This is not the "race card"...I believe people actually think this subconsciously!!! The same way black people think that White leaders are out to get them. Its just the way it is!!! I hope we can change.

Does it bother any of you folks that so many Americans have been given almost everything they own even though they didn't do anything to earn it; and now the president of our country has been given an award that he hasn't done anything to earn? If our president had had any morals and backbone, he would have turned the award down so someone who deserved it could have it. But.....he's just like the rest of the "gimme" Americans, isn't he?
