CHMS honored with Troy Trojans tickets

Published Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Charles Henderson Middle School students learned a valuable lesson Monday – academic excellence has its share of rewards.

Troy University Athletics, the Troy City Board of Education and Troy Bank and Trust partnered together to reward the students by giving all students and faculty one ticket to the football game.

A pep rally was held at CHMS Monday and students were surprised with the news.

“Troy University has a surprise for you,” said CHMS Principal Chreseal Threadgill to the students.

“Because of your academic excellence Troy University Athletics, Troy City Board of Education and Troy Bank and Trust have given all students and faculty one ticket to the Troy v. Middle Tennessee game,” said senior Linebacker Bear Woods.

Woods said family would get discounted tickets if they present a voucher given with the tickets.

“The reason we are able to have Troy University come is because of academic excellence,” Threadgill told the students. “Go support Troy University as they have supported you.”

Threadgill said the students would be recognized for their academic excellence during the football game tonight.

“We were honored because we met and exceede our AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) goals,” Threadgill said.

“CHMS was awarded this because of they had they highest test scores. Troy Bank & Trust, Troy City Board of Education and Troy Athletics decided to recognize them for their academics,” said Troy University Assistant Athletics Director for Development Alicia Bookout.

“Academic excellence has its rewards,” said TCS Superintendent Linda Felton-Smith. “Today our middle school students were rewarded for giving their best for academic achievements with a pep rally sponsored by Troy University and tickets for the Middle Tennessee game.”

During the pep rally, Troy University cheerleaders got the crowd pumped up and several Troy football players helped, too.

Senior Linebacker Boris Lee, Junior Wide Receiver Jerrel Jernigan, Sophomore Wide Receiver Chip Reeves and Woods were all in attendance.

Felton-Smith said the school was fortunate to have this type of partnership with the city of Troy.

“I hope this will serve as a motivator for all students to do their best,” Felton-Smith said.

Threadgill echoed Felton-Smith’s comments.

“I think it’s great that Troy Univeristy and TB&T has shown an interest in Troy City Schools, and I applaude them for recognizing the students and parents,” Threadgill said. “I’m proud that our kids met and exceeded the goals and I want to continue the hard work and hope to have even higher scores next time.”

Students will receive their tickets today.

“I will distribute tickets and vouchers during seventh period on Tuesday,” Threadgill said.

What an amazing honor! A football ticket! Wow! Going to school sure does pay off!

I think it is wonderful that people in the city are trying to reward good deeds done by the students! I can't stand people who try to bring others down, no matter what!!! That is the mark of a sad person. My mom always told me that if you don't have something good to say, then don't say anything at all!!! Thanks, board of Education, Troy Athletics and TB&T. I, for one, appreciate what you are doing!!!

I agree. People should not devalue the importance of a football ticket. All students should also be given those little bendy straws. Those are also pretty sweet. They will encourage students to make good grades and help fill up an otherwise empty stadium, er, I mean, are good for sipping on tasty drinks with.

The game is on ESPN. Obviously it is not a sell out and they are concerned about how it will look on TV if the stands are empty. It reminds me of the time Troy had a TV game and they put tickets in the free Wednesday edition of the Troy Messenger.

But, hey I'm not complaining. I love free giveaways as much as the next guy. I have been to MANY Troy games and have never paid to get in. Never had to. Just walk up to the gate before the game and ask around. I guarantee you that somebody will give you a free ticket.

The MIddle game should be pretty good and if it isn't, what the heck, you won't be out anything. Well unless your boss sees you on TV and you call in sick tomorrow. But what are the odds of him watching the game?

MessengerReader23 and Regis, face it, you are jerks!!! You want to complain when no one does anything and then someone tries to do something nice and you try to belittle it!! Just let the kids anjoy their game!!! Some of the Troy ball players and cheerleaders went to CHMS yesterday to have a special pep rally and the students loved it!!! I think the players are looking forward to CHMS being at the game too!!!

Alot of the kids turned the tickets down! When 10-12 years olds dont want to go, thats sad. Poor Troy might get 12,000 in there tonight!

Everyone always has something negative to say. Noone has made an effort to say congrats to the staff and students at CHMS for making AYP and going far and beyond state requirements. They basically went over requirements. I'm proud of the students, teachers and Mr. Threadgill for his efforts in doing something. For those who are complaining, what have you done to encourage academic achievement? Do you volunteer at the schools, encourage a child once in a while? As far as wanting the stands full for the media, trust me that is not a concern because Troy University will still get PAID!!!! To MessengerReader23 I was at CHMS yesterday and I heard the students response. Basically they were extremely excited to receive this honor and several stated they would try to do even better academically this school year. So, if you don't know what you're talking about then shut up and complain about something you have knowledge of. Let's support our education system. The students were very happy to get the free tickets. If you don't agree then why don't you offer CHMS something better? So if you can't then get a life and read a book! and by all means stop being so negative towards our students!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bamajammer you are telling a lie!!!!! I work at CHMS and they haven't given the tickets out yet!!!! They will give them out seventh peiod. So, how can you say they turned them down? Liar, Liar, Liar!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a highlight for MR23 and Regis, belittling something good. I always have understood those who bring others down are already bottom dwellers. So dwell on the bottom guys, we will go on and enjoy life without you. If it is a middle school receiving free football tickets, we will rejoice. For goodness sakes take a chance and be happy!

Thanks trojantrue!!!!

So they wait until a Tuesday night nationally televised game to give away tickets because it is just the right thing to do. Right.

Nobody cares if they give away free tickets, but trying to disguise the fact that they just want the stands full for TV by saying they are only doing it to reward the kids is beyond pathetic.

You honestly think they don't care if people across the nation watch the game and see a bunch of empty stands? They are trying to impress ESPN so they can get more national exposure. I cannot believe some of you people are so gullible.

Posted by trojantrue (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 1:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

So what if they are Regis? Both entities benefit, big deal. Get a life!

Posted by luv2tch (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 1:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I could care less what the real reason is, my concern is the kids. They are rewarded for doing well and that's all that matters. I am a Troy Univ. Alummi and I will support them if only 10 people were in the stands. If that was the motive to began with than kudos for them for doing it because they didn't have to. They could have just stood in the streets of Troy and passed them out to complete strangers if that were the case.

Posted by luv2tch (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 1:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

oops I meant to say I'm a Troy Univ "Alumni". Also, I agree with you trojantrue, I'm glad somebody is positive for a change.

Posted by BAMAJAMMER (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 1:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Can someone tell the students to not leave at half time?

Posted by regis (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 2:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think tou meant "alumnus". As far as passing tickets out to complete strangers, they will be passing them out to complete strangers at the gate tonight. But hey, like I said, I have been to lots of games for free. I think it's a great bargain. But they shouldn't act like they are only giving away tickets because they are just great guys. They have been giving away free tickets for years.

I remember another incident a few years ago where you could get two free tickets with the purchase of a 12-pack of cokes from the convenience stores. I am totally serious. And yes they really did put tickets in the free edition of the messenger before a TV game one time also.

Posted by luv2tch (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 2:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I am part of Troy University Alumni (pl form of alumnus)....look it up. Why do you even care if they are giving away free tickets. My point is it does not matter the reason, if they did it to make the students more motivated then it's a great idea. This article was not about making Troy Univ. look good it was about rewarding excellence. I don't see any other organization in Troy do something great for our children. Everyone just wants to find something negative and shine a light on it. The student's success and getting a good education is what's important. I could care less about how many people show up, get free tickets or leave early. I spend countless money from my own pocket to aide in educating children. Yet, it's always some sour balls out there that will complain no matter what. I'm really sick of it. I would assume none of you "negative" people have students in school and if you did they probably are not doing well because of your negative attitudes. Please support your children and the people who work hard everyday to love and educate them.

Obviously I know the difference in alumnus and alumni since I corrected you. You initially said, "I am a Troy Univ. Alumni" (twice as a matter of fact) not "I am part of of Troy University Alumni". Look at your own posts before you tell someone to look something up.

And my daughter, wife and I all graduated from college cum laude thank you very much.

It is the same old story,no matter what the City of Troy or Troy Univ. does the same people complain. And Regis if I hated the Univ. as much as you seem to damned if I would go to one of their games free or not.The kids aren't thinking about why they got the tickets just happy they got them.

Posted by BAMAJAMMER (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 3:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Anyone got any Bama Tickets to give away?

Posted by turtle (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 3:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It is a very nice gesture but why just one particular school? Didn't TES, PCES, BPS, BMS, GHS, PCHS, and CHHS after appeal also make AYP? Should not ALL schools and students receive some sort of recognition from the community? To single out one school has upset quite a few parents and has them questioning why?

I hope TROY continues to recognize students for achievement, and recognize all of them not just a select few.

Bam! Got my free tickets and a tailgate party invite! Whoo-hoo! Headed out the door for some free food and beer! See ya'll at the game! (Well maybe one or two of you anyway.)

Posted by fairNbalance (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 7:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well said turtle...would have like to see this go to all the schools in the county...

Posted by belle (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 9:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Did any of those other schools make AYP???

Posted by turtle (anonymous) on October 6, 2009 at 11:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Belle, yes every school in Pike County (public) made AYP. CHHS originally was said to not but after reviewing the data appealed the decision and was found to have made AYP.

I have to agree with you as well, turtle.

Turtle, if you would have read the article you would have seen where CHMS had the HIGHEST test scores. That is why they were selected to receive the tickets.

Posted by fairNbalance (anonymous) on October 7, 2009 at 5:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Trojan6769 where did you find that CHMS (other than in the paper and we all know how reliable the paper here is) actually had the highest score. Google AYP for both county and city schools and could not find city school information? Did find it for County School, WOW Great job!!! Just shame that all schools in the county couldn’t be recognized, considering that Troy University needed to fill the stands.

Posted by WDM (anonymous) on October 7, 2009 at 6:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't know about the rest of you but I think it would have looked better for the City of Troy and Pike County if the stands had been full.

Posted by Observer22 (anonymous) on October 7, 2009 at 9:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why does it look good for Troy and Pike County to have people in the stands at a Troy State game?

Does it make Auburn and Lee county or Tuscaloosa and Tuscaloosa County look good when people come from all over the country to see their teams play . . or does it simply reflect the fact that Tuscaloosa and Auburn have legitimate Division One teams with legitimate claims of being competitive?

Posted by WDM (anonymous) on October 8, 2009 at 8:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If you are to stupid to understand then there is no need to try and explain it.

Posted by regis (anonymous) on October 8, 2009 at 12:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The stadium wasn't nearly full, but it was a good game. Troy looked sharp and it looks like they will have a good quarterback next year. But I felt sorry for the team after the game because there were so few people left for the awarding of the Palladium.

Oh well. What are you gonna do? You gotta consistently have a good product to be able to sell it. Beating the likes of UAB, Arky State and MIddle Tennessee and heading to the New Orleans Bowl is just not that exciting to most folks.

Although Troy State has moved up to DIA, other than a miracle win over a bad BCS team every few years, the games are not really that much more exciting than the Jack State days. If they were, you would never have to give tickets away.

Posted by EMONIQUE989 (anonymous) on October 8, 2009 at 3:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

TES did not make AYP. Scores are given to the teachers and you can see just how well all of the students did.

Posted by BAMAJAMMER (anonymous) on October 8, 2009 at 4:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

regis you are right everyone left around half time as usual including me! I came home and watched the rest on Tv it was hot and muggy but it was sad at the beginning of the fourth quarter they had less fans than the CHHS game usually does. I know alot of Troy fans who just watched it on Tv . And Troy fans complain about Auburn and Bama when its the Auburn and Bama fans that filled their staduim at least half full tuesday night!

Posted by Bamabunny (anonymous) on October 27, 2009 at 4:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I know a lot of people that don't go to the games any more and part of the reason is that the students in the stands....."stand" in front of you to watch the game and talk to each other.

No one can see around them and if asked politely to "please sit" they just look at you and pay no attention....and continue to talk standing up.
