District 6 case warrants criminal investigation

Published Saturday, October 3, 2009

The civil case has been resolved, and Pike County will have a new District 6 commissioner.

But we think that isn’t enough.

We urge law enforcement officials to conduct a thorough legal investigation of the voting process in the District 6 case that led to the ousting of Karen Berry as commissioner.

For months now, we’ve sat silent and waited, along with the rest of Pike County, for a judge to rule in the civil case. We listened as witnesses testified that they did not sign the absentee ballots and as others testified that they did not reside in District 6, even though they voted in the district. Still others presented conflicting testimony about the absentee voting process, drawing into question the notary public’s role in the process.

Now, it’s time for another set of answers.

Voter fraud is a serious crime and a serious allegation. Pike County voters, and those in District 6, deserve to know if this crime was committed. And, if not, Karen Berry and notary public Kathy Lunsford Griffin deserve to have their names cleared of any allegations and insinuations. That may rest with District Attorney Gary McAliley and even the state Attorney General’s office, and we encourage both to step up and step forward.

Our voters and taxpayers deserve answers and follow-through in this case.

I also agree, everyone who has been slandered in these proceedings deserves the chance to vindicate themselves on both sides of this equation. However, I must point out that most of the "personal attacks" have occurred in these postings, as I have not heard it mentioned when out & about town.

Personally, I wish Mr. Fannin & Ms. Berry the best as I'm sure they are both happy this mess if finally over.

Now on the to governor's race & the near constant worry over what Washington is trying to do to us all!

I thought Ms. Berry was a Republican. Troy King is a Republican and noy known for investigating other Republicans. Think this should be handled by our local DA as its not rocket science. I know some of my family has had dealings with Ms. Berry and she was nothing like some of these people are making her out to be, she was always kind and considerate of their concerns. I tend to vote Democtat myself, but if these two ran against each other again I would make an exception. Ms. Berry has suffered enough public persecution and of course, as always, has been convicted in the court of public opinion. As far as Mr. Fannin goes, I reserve Judgement, but appears to be an angry man. I don't know the man and its just a gut feeling, but it bothers me just the same. God bless and be with all involved and may truth prevail.

I commend the messenger for their attention to this matter and pursuit of justice.. If it was left up to our elected officials there would be very few prosecutions and a lot of back door deals, when it comes to the prosecution of public officials. (Still ticked you took my bow wow pow wow at Double Branch statement out), but I realize if it wasnt for the media there would be mass corruption, excuse me, more corruption in our political field. Good Job!!!

I think too that this was just the beginning of a good sized cleanup.

From what I read in the Messenger....it seems there may be room for a few more indictments.

Going to be a long train ride through this tunnel...but no matter what.....the main thing is that the truth be told.

The guilty should be punshied and the innocent shall remain innocent. If Mrs.Berry and Ms. Lunsford are guilty then they should be punished for their crime.
