Fraternity village breaks ground
Published Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Construction has been under way for months, but Troy University officially broke ground on its $8 million fraternity-housing project Saturday.
“The heart of our social system continues to be the Greek system,” said Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr. “What we do through the Greek system is establish friendships that last a lifetime.”
The project will construct seven new fraternity houses along Pell Avenue, where the other homes have stood for decades.
Each home will be two stories in height and sleep 24 students, and they will also contain a chapter room, social room and laundry facilities.
Hawkins said Troy’s sororities were served well in 1997, when the university purchased the Alabama Baptist Homes on Elm Street. However, fraternity members were residing in out-dated homes.
“This new village will reshape our Greek system forever, and I believe it will make us a stronger university,” Hawkins said.
Troy’s Senior Vice Chancellor of Advancement and External Relations John Schmidt, who first “put the wheels on the project,” attested to the value of Greek life.
“In a galaxy a long time ago, Dr. Hawkins…and I were young and fraternity members,” Schmidt said. “They are truly laboratories of life. You learn about yourself, and you learn about each other. It was a galaxy a long time ago, but these friendships have been forever.”
The university’s project, funded through a 2009 bond issue, will also provide funding for a new dining hall and multi-purpose sports arena.
Not all of Troy’s fraternities will be a part of the village. Those that will are: Sigma Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega, Pi Kappa Phi, Delta Chi, FarmHouse and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Ok, I am missing something here.
They are building "frat" houses but none of the mentioned will be in those "frat" houses that they are building?
Whats the point of building them if the fraternities aren't going to be in them?

Where are the Black Social Organizations? Why aren't they going to be in those houses?

"Those that will are: Sigma Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega, Pi Kappa Phi, Delta Chi, FarmHouse and Sigma Alpha Epsilon."
The sentence tells you these 7 WILL be the ones to live in the 7 houses.

The fraternities had to come up with some money to be able to live there. Those seven mentioned had the juice. The others, apparently, didn't.

“The heart of our social system continues to be the Greek system,” said Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr.
If it is then why aren't all greek organizations, who had money or not, included in? Maybe they are working on houses for the other organizations? Even though I doubt it!

Maybe they will set up a ghetto of some sort for those that can't afford to be in the "heart of the social system." Maybe some sort of shanty town for those students that need to buy friends but can't afford top shelf. Good for the university for having priorities in the right place.

These houses aren't free. Do you think if an organization can't come up with the money they should be given something that others had to work for? Obamaism is getting worse than I thought.

You are brain dead, bamaslick. Learn correct grammar, and you won't sound as stupid as you obviously are.

By the way, what does "B!@#" mean?

What does Obama have to do with this? What was your reason for even bringing up his name? What about some idiots in the system having "Bushism"? This article says absolutely nothing about the fraternities having to come with any money. It is widely known that white fraternities are abundant at TU in comparison to black ones. Therefore they may be able to come up with more funds. Yet, who cares because they all need to be there to get an education and it should be priority number one. I was a member of a greek organization but you better believe that my education was far more important to me

Spot, when using a conjunction word like "and" you do not need a comma. Now who sounds stupid?
Posted by spot (anonymous) on November 24, 2009 at 12:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Actually, luv2tch, my comma was correct. My sentence contains two indedendent clauses. Two independent clauses must have a comma.

Why did I bring up Obama? Because I made a New Year's resolution to bring his name up in a negative way at least once per day. Half the day had passed without my mentioning his name. Had to do it.

The group of words "learn correct grammar" is not a sentence with a complete thought; therefore, it is not an independent clause. Why would you want to even think about Obama everyday? Use that energy doing something positive. If you don't like him then that's your opinion but why think about someone you don't like everyday? Do you have that much hate in you? God bless. I will not read anymore posts so don't try to respond because I will not read it.

"Learn correct grammar" is a complete thought. "You" is understood. It's the same as "You learn correct grammar." I hope what you "luv2tch" is not English, because you are incorrect.
By the way, my bit about Obama is called "sarcasm." In reality, I do not think about Obama everyday.

It's nice to know we have money for housing such a deprived bunch of kids. I know kids who work two jobs just to get money for tuition and we're building housing for the fraternities to party. Just goes to show how the divide between the have and have nots is widening. How about concentrating on more education. You can learn a lot about appropriate social behavior the old fashioned way, join the military.

A BIG AMEN lefty . Eight million would pay for quite a lot of education for those who don't have the money .

I went to college and earned my degree. I must admit, if it was not for all the great parties, I would have dropped out. So that goes both ways. Great thinking Jack, party on.

Look at it this way. How many people will be put to work by building these houses? How many tuition-paying students will this attract? Some of you folks need to think through this thing a little more.
Posted by oldhog (anonymous) on November 24, 2009 at 7:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)
It does attract the students. Money well spent on the youth and future leaders of America. Look at your last three Presidents. Clinton, Bush and Obama. Party Amimals all three. $Build them Jack and they will come.$

Troy lacks housing... Fraternity houses will help accomidate more students on campus, plus less drunk drivers on the road as ppl party and sleep in the same place.
Brothers rent the house so its not like its free... and all my fraternity brothers have jobs or two.
Black fraternities, as to my knowledge, are not allowed to have fraternity houses because of their own fraternity laws.

I wasn't aware that black students are excluded from these seven fraternities. Instead of grousing about the absence of fraternities which discriminate against non-black students, why not work toward ending racism in the fraternities?

Hey Spot. I bet you are a Christian. Aren't you? To be more specific, Southern Baptist.

As a black man, I could care less about the fraternity housing situation. My 20 yr old son @ TU concentrates more on the white sorority girls. If people knew how many of their little girls at TU have jungle fever they would be shocked.
Clayton Bigsby was a black man that was in a white fraternity.

@ tst1980 As a member of a black organization, there is nothing in anyone's bylaws about not having houses. At University of Alabama many of the black organizations have houses.

You guys need to relax. It's not like we are paying to bus these frat boys to Walmart or anything. Besides, you are missing the real story here. John Schmidt just told the Troy Mess that he and Dr. Hawkins are from a different galaxy. Maybe they were in some sort of jedi fraternity or something. "That's no moon, it's a space station." I knew they looked way too comfortable wearing those robes at graduation ceremonies.
