Trooper injured in wreck
Published Tuesday, November 17, 2009
An Alabama State Trooper experienced non-life threatening injuries after his patrol car was struck while he was attempting to make a traffic stop south of Brundidge Monday afternoon.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was attempting to turn his marked patrol unit around in the northbound lane of U.S. 231 south between Brundidge and Hamilton Crossroads in southern Pike County, according to Trooper Spokesman Kevin Cook.
Cook said the trooper had his blue lights activated when his car was struck by a Dodge pick up traveling north.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, and everyone involved was transported to Troy Regional Medical Center where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
State Troopers are still investigating the accident cause.

Hey you may be on to something WDM . Probably rushing to get there first to assist in the stop . Hope the person intended for the stop realizes how close he was to getting assaulted.

I have personally watched these "State Troopers" act like the "Dukes of Hazzard" and achieve speeds of better than 100 mph to run down someone going maybe 5 mph over the speed limit. They will do "U" turns in the highway and cut through medians over something so minute. I think for the most part these ticket dispensers are nothing more than predators on the highway. All that I see here is revenue generation. The Dodge truck involved in this wreck with the State Trooper will get no help from the State with the repairs to his vehicle and as a matter of fact may be charged with obstruction of justice ( a felony charge) because he hindered the Trooper from making the traffic stop. I read about a similar event about a year ago in Saint Clair County where a log truck T-boned a Pell City Police car who went thru a red light in hot persuit and the officer was killed. The officer had a memorial put up in his honor in Pell City as a hero and the truck driver is being charged with man slaughter if my memory serves me correctly.. There are way too many police on the highway.

I know for a fact the trooper was going down 231 south at atleast 80, no lights when he left troy, I was behind him.. Troopers are not supposed to be speeding unless their lights are on. There have been numerous times I have been tailgated by troopers on 231 when I have my 3 year old with me. I never get tailgated by one without my daughter with me. The day I do the trooper will eat the back end of my tahoe and that is a fact.

Just because he turned his lights on does not mean that he is not responsible for the safety of the other motorists on the highway. That truck was so loaded down with sweet potatoes, it probably was not as easy to stop as the trooper might have thought when he pulled the u-turn in front of him. I am no traffic accident investigator, but for the truck to have hit the trooper car directly between the front and rear doors, i think the trooper might not have seen the truck.

I have personally seen state troopers reach high speeds on Hwy 231 also, but i'm sure that they are highly trained to doso. Besides i am almost certain that its necessary in order to catch up with the many drivers i always see speeding on that highway each day. They are always working accidents on that road. I just hope and pray that when the next one happens, Mr. anonymous won't be the one who suffers from a perminent injury from someone without any insurance. The troopers are just doing their job man.

DarrylDavis, you should get your facts straight before you make your comments. Your memory is either really bad or you weren't paying attention to the mulitiple stories on the Pell City police officer that was killed. That police officer was my cousin and his name was Greg Surles. He was on a routine patrol (not in hot pursuit) and it was the log truck driver that ran the red light and hit Greg. He left behind a wife, a 4-year old, an 11-week old that will never get to know their father...who was a wonderful man by the way. He may not be a hero in your book, but in his children's eyes, and in the eyes of all who knew him, he is a hero. For all those "too many" police on the highway that you talk about, I bet you would certainly want one around if you were in trouble or if you were in an accident. Don't say harsh things or make comments when you don't know what you are talking about.

Some mighty BIG talking folks on here today.

Bet they don't talk that way face to face with a trooper . Sounds like they all have been stopped before and this gives them the chance to mouth off as an unknown.

If a police car is in pursuit...the lights are supposed to be on. Lights on or lights off.....I should think the police are subject to the general rules of the road.
If someone is coming in the opposite direction....and they see the lights they need to slow down and allow the officer to turn....but if the officer turned in front of the truck...and the truck was too close to stop...I should think that the truck driver would not be at fault.

The only people I know of that think we have to many cops/troopers are the bad guys.

What good does it do to speculate about what happened here and who was at fault? Unless you personally witnessed this accident and know the facts, why would you bad mouth the state trooper. He has a very dangerous job and I'm sure he was just trying to do what we pay him to do. Just be thankful no one was killed and call it what it was - an accident. And no I'm not married to a state trooper and don't even know one personally. I do know I have never been stopped and given a ticket when I didn't deserve it.

FoX, U might be on to something. My suggestion is you get you a good looking blonde blow up doll. Trooper pulls you over, just swap seats. Who wants to argue with a woman!

I have never gotten a ticket...but last year I thought my luck had run out.
I was coming back from Dothan after visiting my mother in a Hospice facility. I did not even realize how fast I was going because I just wanted to get back home.
Lo and behold I saw lights in my rear view mirror. I pulled over and the officer came to my window. He said "do you know how fast you were going?"
I said..."no sir not exactly but I have a funny feeling you're gonna tell me!"
He laughed. Then told me I was going 82. I said..."Officer if you say I was going 82 then I was going 82."
I apologized for speeding......he smiled and told tme to slow it down. I thanked him and i was on my way.
