Weed resigns as Southside Baptist pastor
Published Saturday, November 14, 2009
The Rev. Jerome “Bo” Weed has resigned as pastor of Southside Baptist Church in Troy effective Dec. 31, 2009.
Weed said his resignation probably came as a shock to most members of the church but the decision was not made without much prayer and thought.
“It was a tough decision and wasn’t made hastily,” Weed said. “It took me about a year to come to this decision but, when making a decision of this magnitude, there are so many intangibles. There were no arguments, no battles to be fought. I just sensed it.”
When Weed steps from behind the pulpit seven Sundays from now, he will be one week shy of pastoring Southside for seven years.
“Southside has been a good ministry,” he said. “But there just comes a time when there is a need for a new vision and a new spirit in a church. You become aware that the members will respond to the leadership of a new pastor. They need someone new to follow and someone new to lead.”
Weed said he believes that God has new opportunities waiting for him.
“I don’t believe that, right now, we will leave Troy,” he said. “There will hopefully be opportunities for me to supply preach and I will be open and available to God’s call as I always have been. God will be glorified in whatever I do.”
Weed said his ministry has always been “kingdom work.”
“I never have thought that my ministry was to be just about one church,” he said. “I have tired to always be available to the community and I will continue to do that. I want to be a part of the Troy and Pike County communities and I want to be a voice in those communities.”
Weed and his family will continue their memberships at Southside and, unless his presence becomes a “distraction,” Weed will be in attendance unless he is invited to preach at other churches.
Weed is originally from Midland City. He attended Troy University and worked in Texas as a longshoreman and with Taco Bell before moving to Lake Charles, La. where he answered God’s call.
He attended the Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, Fla. and served six years as youth minister in Dothan before being called to Southside Baptist Church.
“I’m appreciative that I have always had the privilege of being a voice in the community and of the opportunities I’ve had to be involved in the many activities and events,” Weed said.
“I have enjoyed the encouragement and support of other pastors and hope to be a source of encouragement and support to them. I want to be ‘a light in the darkness’ when there is a need. I want to be a part of this wondrful community until God has other plans for me.”

Following God's Call, Often times when a pastor resigns people just think that something has happen within the fellowship of the Church but there are many a time when the Lord is calling the shots, I know from my own experience because I resigned my duties as Sunday School Director and teacher at the Church I attended on Dec. 31st of last year and it was because God through His voice inside me said it was time to move on. The key is God, what does He need you to do. Every Christian has a guide called the Holy Spirit and He gives directions to all Christian's but so many times we want to follow our own paths and do things in our own strength and then we get frustrated because things just don't work out the way we think it should. God's will is perfect, ours is flawed. Brother Bo Weed is a true man of God, he listens to what the Lord is telling him as we all should. The one thing I have learned over the years whatever God is telling or showing you listen and follow. It maybe something you are not comfortable with and that's what happens a lot of the time, we get too comfortable and we say to ourselves someone else will do it. God choose you! Take up your cross daily and follow Him and get out of your comfort zone. I ask that everyone in the community lift Bro. Bo Weed and his family up their prayers and by doing so may even help him to see exactly what God has instore for him. Bro. Bo we love you and support you %100 because you are following God's path for your life. God Bless You! Jesse D. Kirkland

Bro. Bo was right, it was indeed a shock, at least to our family. Bro. Bo has meant a lot to the members of Southside, and he will be greatly missed! He is a true leader, and most definitely a great man of God. We love you, Bro. Bo!!!

OldSchoolPike3Worker: I would like to say that this is in the newspaper because there are actually people who believe in the ministry that Bro. Bo has brought to Southside Baptist Church. It is good to have articles in the local newspaper that talk about someone who has had a positive influence in the community. There needs to be more Bo Weed's in our community. He is a fine man but most important he is a man of God and is not ashamed to talk about Jesus out in the public. We all need to be able to get out of our comfort zone and be a better witness for God and his son Jesus Christ. If you truly don't understand why an article like this is in the newspaper then I would like to invite you to attend the Sunday School and Worship services at Southside Baptist Church tomorrow morning. Sunday School is at 9:35 and the Worship service begins at 10:50. Then maybe after the Worship service you will have a better understanding as to why an article was in the newspaper about Brother Bo Weed. God Bless you and your family.

"Often times when a pastor resigns people just think that something has happen within the fellowship of the Church..."
Huh? What are you talking about? Did anybody say anything about something happening? Why would you assume people would think there was some sort of controversy about his leaving? From what people have told me, Brother Bo is the LAST person who would be involved in anything controversial. Why would you even suggest people would assume such a thing?!

Anyone who knows Pastor Bo knows that he is a man with integrity and a most loving heart. He is driven by a love for Jesus and a desire that those who are "lost", having not accepted Jesus as their Savior and Lord....meet Jesus and be radically saved. Brother Bo is at the hospital when people are in need that may just be a friend of a friend. He ministers to those who hurt. He has a special concern for those in Honduras, who have such beautiful hearts and have such great need, worldly and spiritually.
Brother Bo has impacted my life and my husbands life is such tremendous ways. He is a wonderful mentor, a great friend, and a passionate Christian. Those who hate to be around judgemental and unapproachable Christians would love to meet him. Please, don't make this a nasty thing, making him look bad. He is following God's call on his life and the rest of us should try that. Let's make a positive diffrerence in other's lives. Let's love others......especially those who are difficult to love (the Bible tells us to do that). Let's lift Bo and his family up in our prayers and ask God's blessings upon them. We love you Bo and will miss you terribly.

Hey guys, I'm with you on this. Ditto to all of the good comments about Bro Bo. I'm just asking why this made the paper? I've never seen a news article written in a paper about a pastor leaving a church. I've heard of several pastors leaving different churches in Troy but never read about it in the paper. I wasn't trying to offend anyone.

I heard a lady (I've never seen her before in my life) speaking to others about this on Saturday. After listening to her and all that she said about this man of God, I can honestly say he is following the call on his life.
From what she said about how he feels about lost souls and the passion he has to reach them; God is about to allow him to do just that. When you have the kind of passion she says this man has to reach souls; Evangelism is your passion. It's hard to Evangelize if you're committed to the pulpit as a Pastor. Evangelism is nothing more than outreach...street ministry...missionary ministry...get out and go get them ministry. From what I overheard this weekend, Bro Bo is being called to Evangelize in this season of his life. Wow!
He (as well as his family) will certainly need our prayers to cover him. Evangelist come across all kinds of spirits out there. They are attacked (naturally and spiritually) while seeking out lost souls and bringing them back to the house of God. I think it's a beautiful thing to have a heart for people (souls) as Evangelists do!
I don't know you Bro Bo, but I applaud your obedience to the call of God on your life!

I love My God, The Creator, I love My Jesus, The Savior, I love The Holy Spirit, My Conscience, I love the Bible, My Guide, I love my Church, The Family of God and I love My Pastor, The Sheppard of the Flock! The comments I made earlier about Brother Bo and God's calling were meant to be words of encouragement not only for him but also for his family and for Southside Baptist Church and for the community of Troy, Alabama. I have been blest over the years to serve in Churches with Pastor's who lived and spoke God's Word not only from the Pulpit but in their daily lives. Pastor Bo Weed is one of these men who have a passion like none I have ever seen and God is leading him in a new direction of Ministry. As I read the other comments that were posted I found myself being criticized for a sentence that I used at the very beginning of my comments that when a pastor leaves a church suddenly that people will often times think that something has happen to cause such a decision though that was not the intent nor to imply that is what happen at Southside Baptist Church but as a general rule in Churches. I apologize to anyone who may have been offended by the comment. Again there was no malice or harm but was to suggest that our fellowship was strong and understood Brother Bo's decision though it was quite a shock even to me. I am simply stating that in the four Churches I have been apart of when this has happen people come running trying to find out what lead to their decision. I am an ordained Deacon and I know what I am talking about because I have been cornered on more than one occasion when it was just time for the pastor to move on but my comment was taken for something negative. Again, I apologize to anyone that my words may have hurt. I always have been lead by the Spirit to be an encourager to others. I love to see people smile and their hearts filled with joy, I encourage my men on my crew, we pray together, we share testimony and they have a pep in their step and I encourage all in Troy and Pike County to be involved in a Church and be involved in a ministry leading other people to Jesus Christ. That is what it is all about anyway, Jesus!!!!
