H1N1 vaccines available today

Published Thursday, November 12, 2009

More H1N1 vaccines are available at the Pike County Health Department beginning today.

Clinic Supervisor Debbie Baker said the shots will be available Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We will give them until we run out,” Baker said.

The target groups have been expanded and now include, pregnant women, house and caregiver contacts of children younger than 6 months, health care and emergency medical services personnel, persons from 6 months through 24 years of age, people aged 25 to 64 years old with medical conditions associated with a higher risk of flu complications.

Some of these conditions are asthma and diabetes.

Baker said the health department expects to conduct the school clinics sometime in late November, but an exact date and time has not been scheduled yet.

The health department is expected to give the nasal vaccine for Kindergarten through 9 years old, but children with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and immounosuppression may not receive the nasal mist vaccine.

State health officials urge parents of these high risk children to consider vaccination with inactivated H1N1 vaccine, which is the shot, through their private medical provider or the county health department.

Posted by BeachGirl (anonymous) on November 12, 2009 at 8:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't blame you BeachGirl.

After months of reading your comments about this issue, I think it's finally time to leave one of my own...

For those of you who don't understand how the seasonal flu vaccine is composed, let me educate you. The flu virus is constantly mutating (i.e. there are many different strains). The three worst strains each year, become part of the vaccine for the next year. The vaccine is produced the same way; grown in eggs because the vaccine needs a live host in which to grow. The only people at serious risk are those with egg allergies. So here's a wake up call...the 2010 seasonal flu vaccine will be partly composed of the 2009 H1N1 virus!

There is no reason to fear the H1N1 vaccine. It is riskier to forgo the vaccine and catch the H1N1 strain, which could have an adverse effect on your long-term health. Especially if you have pre-existing conditions.

Instead of reading about other people's fears, do some real research (and yourself a favor) and check out the CDC's fact sheet on H1N1:

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/v...

Education preempts fear.

To greg house i do my own research and then i make my own decision and i do not base it on anyone else's opinion and that includes you.

Posted by BeachGirl (anonymous) on November 12, 2009 at 3:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

i respect the opinions of others and if you guys want to get it its fine but just because its made iwth 'part of' the regular flu vaccine doesnt make it safe. When the person from the CDC says he wont get it? that says something..this vaccine has not been out long enough to know the adverse affects it could cause. I for one will not be a statistic. but thats my choice, and i too work in healthcare and have seen the studies on it. If you guys want to get it and it works fne then thats great but my choice is not to.

and thnks luv2tch..=D

It takes blind faith to let someone that you do not know stick a needle in your arm and inject a fluid that you have no understanding of into your body.
There is an MD who has commented here on this forum who is saying all is ok with the vaccine but he list the center for disease control as a reference. Doctor what say you about mercury??? By the way I am already familiar with the amount being so small that it would not hurt a fly(as for those who say yea instead of nay) but that is when ingested and not injected wouldn't you say??(mercury injected goes straight to the blood brain barrier but is passed thru when ingested).
It's interesting that in all other instances mercury is deadly poisen to the extent of taking mercury thermometers away from the presence of children but as a matrix for the vaccine it is no problem. Any reference that is a government agency or has dot gov at the end of the link I will consider lies or propoganda as it's hard to put any confidence in any entity that is known well for it's deceptions.

"Greg_House_MD"

So Greg.....you are not now implying that you are indeed a Medical Doctor are you???

My opinion about the vaccine is each person needs to make that decision on their own as to whether or not to get the shot.

There are pros and cons about it and I would suggest speaking with your own doctor about what is best for you as an individual. He has your medical history and will make a decision based on just that.

Don't worry. If the feds have their way, you won't have to make a decision. They will just fine you or put you in jail if you don't get it.

When I was pregnant I didn't even take aspirin.....and even if my pregnancy was present day....I would not get a flu shot.

There has not been enough time to research as to whether or not the vaccine would have a lasting effect on a fetus or perhaps cause a miscarriage. The fact that some pregnant women that got the vaccine did indeed lose their baby would send a red flag to me not to get the shot until further information is available.......or perhaps after the baby was born.

Simply my own opinion.....each to his own.

my biggest concern is that they are planning on doing a schoolwide vaccination using the nasal version of the vaccine. the nasal mist contains a weakened but LIVE virus. it can cause a mild version of the illness.

even if they don't become truly sick, if they sneeze after receiving it in the school, then they could potentially infect the children who are NOT receiving it, either from parental choice or underlying health conditions.

Posted by Bamabunny (anonymous) on November 13, 2009 at 1:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

WOW! bamamom77.....I never even thought of that.

Children carry so many germs too.....and bring home many illnesses from school. One child is sick and in school....in 2 weeks time all the kids are sick or have been sick.

Some very solid points of interest.

Thank you!

DarrylDavis -

from what i have read, the H1N1 single use vials do NOT contain any mercury (or thimerosal). however, the multiple dose vials DO contain at least trace amounts. it has been that way for years.

Bamabunny -

yes, children are nasty little critters! LOL we don't do any special regimen to stay healthy. i do try to make sure that we are outside a bit each and every day that the sun is shining, as I believe that vitamin D is the most important vitamin when it comes to the immune system. we generally don't wear sunscreen unless we will be outside for over an hour. :-) since the days are shorter, we will be starting vitamin D supplements to help out!

Fox, you use the term "conspiracy theorist" in your comment so I thought I would list the definition of conspire, the root of the word conspiracy so everyone would know it's meaning.:
conspire
c.1300, from O.Fr. conspirer, from L. conspirare "to agree, unite, plot," lit. "to breathe together," from com- "together" + spirare "to breathe"
So as per the definition of the word then wouldn't most everything that we have done or experienced in our lives be a conspiracy?? Even your own existance is because of a conspiracy between two people.
Your link for reference has dot gov at the end so I personally do not put any confidence in any organization that is as corrupted as the government. Please list another source for a good argument against boycotting the vaccine.

FoX, i dont care enough to search for it, im at work...Ive seen many of your posts and you never agree with what anyone says so why would i try?? I will believe what i like as a medically trained person and you can believe as you will...

Bamamom, i hadnt thought of that either! you are so correct..Ive told my sister not to let my nephews get it but now i see we have other things to worry about...

Amen to that bamamom77 <s>

"Dangers of FoX".....never had or never will have people skills....because you have not even got a clue as to what maturity is all about and getting along with people.

For a pregnant women.....milk is a main source of calcium...and one main sustenance that the baby will draw from it's mother....and needs to draw from it's mother.

Plus I rarely even use my cell phone.

You don't have to be the "Google King" FoX.....we can all look things up if we want to. Thing is when you do it we mostly ignore it.....and just laugh at your attempts to "dazzle us" with all your google quotes while also using all your other alias names.

Get a life.

FoX....isn't it time for you to get your "Hello Kitty" jammies on? The ones with the feet and trap door?

Grow up and get a life.

FoX...

If you are addressing me....half of what you say makes no sense at all because you continually contradict yourself in more ways than one.

And BTW...I never said "vaccines are poison". I suggested that people talk to their own doctors who have their HX on file...and from that....make a determination about the vaccine.

Get your facts straight and go to bed like a good little boy and maybe tomorrow you will start growing up and get a life.

milk is awesome. unfortunately, humans don't need the large amounts of bovine growth hormone that is in it. however, it is a fairly cheap, tasty way to get calcium, so i make the choice to drink it. life is all about choices.

i don't necessarily believe that all vaccines are "poisons". however, they DO introduce foreign matter into the body, which can be dangerous for some individuals. the fact that the flu virus is constantly changing and mutating can lead to a vax being totally useless in fighting whatever flu shows up that year. why take the chance if you are a normally healthy individual?

i believe that the flu vax is beneficial to some people, like my mother who is very prone to getting pneumonia. i would only recommend the shot to her though, as it only contains flu proteins and not a live virus.

That is true bamamom77

I drink milk and the vaccine is not for everyone.

LOL geeeez you're funny FoX....

But seriously....grow up and get a life!
