Thornton leaves Goshen Eagles
Published Tuesday, May 26, 2009
Joe Thornton is leaving Goshen again.
The head football coach of the Eagles left Goshen and came back for the 2005 season after spending time at Saks High School in Anniston.
The Pike County Schools Board of Education accepted Thornton’s resignation for a second time Tuesday at a special meeting.
Pike County Schools Superintendent Mark Bazzell was informed Tuesday about 8:30 a.m. by Goshen principal Dr. Al Griffin that Thornton had turned in his resignation.
“This was kind of short notice and we were not anticipating it,” Bazzell said. “It is my understanding that he is going to Enterprise to be an assistant coach there.”
Bazzell said no more details were known about the resignation, but the board plans to move forward as quickly as possible to find a new head football coach for the Eagles.
The resignation was accepted with one condition. Thornton had not put when he plans on leaving Goshen.
Bazzell recommended that the resignation be accepted with one condition.
He said Thornton must inform the board of a date he will work his final day as an Eagle.
Bazzell and the board agreed to post the job opening for a head football coach and athletic director at Goshen High School immediately.
Thornton led the Eagles to the playoffs in his first stint with the team in 2000 and 2001.
He got the Eagles back to the playoffs in 2008 for the first time since 2001.
They lost in the first round to Pickens County, 27-14.
Thornton could not be reached for comment at press time.

My kids attend GHS & from what I have seen, Dr Griffin goes by the "book"- and that is a good thing! He is really making an effort to improve our school & make it something we are proud of!

You know therealmccoy, while parents like us may respect an administrator who deals out discipline fairly and does his best to create an enviornment where kids can actually learn and succeed, it amazes me how many parents see that as a bad thing.
Kathie Lee, it might not be a good thing. Goshen did well under Thornton before and again when he came back but not so great while he was gone. There has got to be stability in a program for it to succeed.

This is for everyone who has posted a comment I was a student at Goshen High School for both periods of Thorton coaching. The first time he was there we had several players quit who had been playing for awhile and then had some children that wouldn't play for him when he came back to coach for the second time. He is an ok person but as far as a coach I couldn't tell you because I never played for him. But as far as anything being said about him taking Goshen to the playoffs both times a coach does not take a team to playoffs the players do. A coach is there to teach plays to the players but he does not play for them they done the work to get where they got. As for Mr. Griffin, I know several students that do not like him and several parents that don't care to much for him either. And the students I can understand but the parents go on what they have seen we they have met him. And first impressions are lasting impressions and he doesn't make a very good first impression. As far as the teachers that are leaving the girls basketball coach is leaving because her husband got a job in a different city and of course she is going to go with her husband, the other teachers that are leaving are retiring and there is only one that is known. So that is not many teachers or coaches.

You are right bltjs07, players are what will make or break a team, however it should also be noted that Thornton was the coach during those times. I have alot of family and friends in Goshen school system as parents, students, and employees, and the majority of the parents who complain about administration are the ones with kids who have no respect for authority and think they can "rule the school" and they get that mentality from their parents. If parents think they can do the jobs better then go to school, get the degrees and do it. Until then instead of working against everyone all the time try working with them. You'd be amazed at how much gets accomplished that way.

turtle thanks but with the administration the students that I know that have a problem with the administration are not problem children. So there parents don't have the reason to dislike him because of there children. And I know quite a few of the teachers and students as well as people in the community of Goshen, considering I went to Goshen from kindergarden to graduation of my senior year and I know that some of those people don't like the administration. I have said it before Mr Major Lane should have the job as principle instead of vice principle more students respect and listen to him. And just to let you know I am in college getting a degree. So therefore I am doing something to change it.

Way to go bltjs07! I am glad you are furthering your education because in today's world without it, you are stuck. I too like Major Lane, I have known him since his PCHS days. He was also a good person to have on my side when I worked at Goshen. I hope for the kids sake, everyone can come together and work together to make Goshen a great learning enviornment because that is the most important thing.

Let's see where to start on this one...

First of all, I do have a degree but it is not in Education. I have always tried to teach my "children" in whatever way to respect whoever is in the head position, because no matter what comes up, this person has the AUTHORITY to do as he sees fit. I will say that yes, my family has been involved in some decisions we did not feel were handled just right, but we have tried to live up to them. As far as the football team and the coaches, it was said earlier that coaches are there to teach these students, they can't play the games for them! Good luck, Eagles, Coaches, and Dr. Griffin! Several of these coaches as well as
Dr. Griffin have administered to some of my students in the past year and I must say that I think they have learned a little part of what RESPECT means. But, this teaching first of all SHOULD start at home, cause if we as parents have none, then what can we expect from our students??????
