What could you do with $20?

Published Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Stimulus, bailout and economic recovery are all words that seem to be a little invasive these days.

One can hardly turn on the TV, pick up a newspaper or even walk through the checkout aisle at Wal-Mart without hearing one of these terms tossed around.

If you’re like me, you’ll find it can get a little depressing.

But what if these words didn’t come with the doom and gloom that’s been associated with them?

What if, instead, the stimulus was something that had a positive connotation? And, what if instead of the federal government, the one stimulating the economy was you?

Well, that’s something The Messenger wants to find out.

But it’s something we can’t do alone.

That’s why The Messenger staff is calling all Pike County residents to do a little shopping today.

The concept is simple — spend $20 at a local business this May 20th. The implications could be huge.

At least that’s what one local economist had to say.

Judson Edwards, economics professor at Troy University, said if everyone in Pike County above the age of 19 went out and spent just $20 at a local store, sales would more than double today.

One $20 sale might not be much for businesses like Terra Cotta, Troy Discount Tire and Merle Norman.

But, $20 from seven different people would be another story.

Local businessmen and women work hard for our community. From the people of Steed Tire to Jackson Hardware to Epix and the Goshen Farmers Co-Op — to all Pike County businessmen and women who wake up each morning to provide some service to our area — they all play a vital role to our local towns.

Today, let’s give a little in return. Let’s see how far $20 can really go.

It may not be as far as we think. But then again, there’s only one way to find out.

Holli your so right . True that one twenty dollar purchase isn't a lot but as you stress several add up quickly and make a big difference . Hopefully the tax collected will mean a big help to the schools and local government .

For $20 I could fill up my car and drive to Montgomery to do some shopping.

$20.00 would about cover a trip to buy large pk. of hamburger, peanut butter and bread. Unfortunately you would not have enough gas to get back home.

I have done business with all the business you mentioned except Epix, sorry I am not familiar with it. There are somethings you just can't buy in Pike Co. I do not go to Montgomery (10% tax), I go to Dothan.

You must have poor gas mileage, uglydog. $20 could last me to Montgomery and back, with some to spare.

And I hope you are not putting peanut butter on your burger. LOL. You can easily buy 1 lb. of hamburger, buns, lettuce, tomato, onion, etc., chips, dip, and a 2 liter of cola within $20. Even if you shopped locally (i.e. Ingram's Curb Market, the farmer's market, etc.)

$20.00- $10.00 for family pack of hamburger, large jar off brand peanut butter $3.65, good loaf of bread $2.00 add tax $1.41 total of $17.06. Gas at $2.25 a gallon to come to town, I might get back home if I don't buy a $1.29 coke, but then I did not put tax on the coke.

Peanut butter on hamburger I haven't tried that yet, but maybe some day.

If you are going to spend the $20.00 going and coming to Montgomery, why are you going to Montgomery with no money?

Because it's a beautiful drive.

It is a beautiful ride if you take the back roads. While in Montgomery there are a few rewarding things that are free. You can tour the Alabama Capital, well you already paid for it with taxes, might as well take a look. The Hank William's museum use to be free. Oak Wood cemetery is full of history, if you take time to dig it up.
