Harley pit stop in Troy area

Published Sunday, May 10, 2009

Not all of the 100 motorcycles that made a pit stop in Troy on Saturday morning were Harleys but every one of the motorcyclists had a heart of pure gold, said group leader, Michael Smith of Montgomery.

“We’re on the way to Geneva to give a hug to the hurting heart of one of our own,” said Smith, who is a member of the Seven Bridges Road Chapter of the Iron Warriors Motorcycle Club that is made up of active, former and retired firefighters and law enforcement officers. “Our club is hosting a ride from Montgomery to Geneva which will benefit the Josh Myers Family Tragedy Relief Fund.”

Myers, a Geneva County deputy sheriff, lost his wife, Andrea, and 19-month-old daughter, Corrine, in the deadly shooting spree, which began in Coffee County and continued through Geneva County on March 19.

“Josh was among the officers dispatched in the multi-agency manhunt for the gunman who, after a shootout with police, turned the weapon on himself,” Smith said. “Sadly, Josh later learned that his wife and daughter were among the shooter’s 10 victims.”

Smith said Myers is now left to raise his other two children, 4-year-old Isaak and Ella, four months, on his own. Ella was shot and wounded in the attack.

“The chapter membership of the Iron Warriors Motorcycle Club Southern Region is deeply saddened by this senseless tragedy,” said Jim Alston, club president. “While many of us don’t know Josh personally, we consider him to be one of our brothers and we are heartbroken over the loss of his wife and daughter.”

Bikers from the Montgomery area and much of Southeaster Alabama joined the ride to benefit the Geneva County deputy sheriff.

“When we arrive at the courthouse in Geneva, we will present a check in the amount of $6,000 to Josh Myers,” said Smith, who is director of business and government sales for ride sponsor Southern LINC Wireless. “Our neighbors in Southeastern Alabama have suffered a tremendous loss in their communities. I can only hope that the financial and emotional support generated by this ride will help the Myers family in their time of grief.”

Yes, this wonderful article about these wonderful humans is exactly what we need to read about. Maybe some nuns who ride unicycles will also stop at some gas station and truly enrich our community and bless all of us with their transient ways. True top notch journalism here.

reader23,you should win a prize for that comment, those people are firemen and law officers not a bunch of cooks and they help alot of people like Mr.Myers.Alot of the people you see ride thru Troy on motorcycles are doctors, lawyers, business men/women etc.

It is wonderful to read a article that is positive, however reader23 you lost me on the "nuns" that ride unicycles, and stop, get gas, and truly enrich "our community" with their "transient ways"?
I did not fall off the turnip wagon yesterday, and do realize, and know, that majority of the ones the ride motorcycles and not a bunch of cooks!!????? Would you care to elaborate for someone that may lack just a bit of the gesture of this comment? It seems as if a positive thank you, and appreciation, to a wonderful cause, in a sense, and I may be wrong, somehow on your end, had to become somewhat per say a bit of arrogance here.
Not everyone has the capabilities or abilities to be a Doctor, policeman, fireman, etc... for whatever the reason may be, but makes those that are not, any less of a human being, that is successful and do good deeds. Success is not always measured by plaques on a wall, or awards, or recognition on a front page level. Alot of the time it is the ones in the background, the "fatbacks" with money, that do help, and go unnoticed, at their own choice, and support worthy causes.
But there is compassion, gratitude, and appreciation for people that are able to do these wonderful missions. I come from a large family, that is in Law Enforcement to some degree across the US, and when I read your comment, I do have to say that it pierced the soul here, and the word "transient" just what sense are you using that in? Help me out on this one please,so maybe I can understand just exactly what you are saying.

I think cops, lawyers & doctors on bikes would probably be so much higher in the air than the cooks and laborers on thier bikes you could not see them come through Troy.

I meant crooks, sorry about the error.I think everyone knew what I meant.alonecitygal you missunderstand alot of comments on this forum,my point was because someone is rideing a bike does not make them a CROOK or low life as some people seem to think and if you read my comment you would see I think they were doing a good thing.

It's ok WDM, and thank you. Perhaps I do misunderstand some things,on these forums, but give myself a A for effort. My point as well as yours is your last post. It is a wonderful thing, but I yet to understand reader23's comments. In today's society when someone reads a article that is of this nature, and people helping people, it makes some realize that maybe society really isn't as cruel as it seems to be as a whole.

Maybe you people should learn how to type before you wade into online conversations about motorcycles. I know it's hard to re-read something before you hit "preview comment" and then again when you hit "post comment," but I know that if you spend enough time in chef school, you can become a cook and not a crook and then you can have a super-awesome adventure across the state in the name of some charity. Why must you be so full of contempt for the victims of crimes? Is it because you never learned how to read? I give you an F for effort.

Harley's average price is about $17,000. A 2009 top of the line model off the show room floor goes for a little over $35,000. There is a place (or use to be) south of Dothan that had customized bikes costing up to $50,000. These are not the bikes put together by the so called gangs, a piece from here and a piece from there. Even though doctors and lawyers seem to be kind of a blood thirsty group.

Reader23, you know, you appear to have that same "rectal cranial inversion" problem that Jack Bauer has. Maybe YOU should take that F for effort, and see if you might can penetrate that cranial problem, and somehow possibly correct it, if you can get past your rear cleavage there!
You take a worthy cause, that was done to help someone, and make a complete jerk out of yourself! This is not high school and so what if someone makes a typo???The gest of the story was bascically a good deed that had been done..... not about motorcylces~You must have spent your time in school working on a Masters in learning to run off at the mouth, must make you feel superior to try and belittle people!! Geez.........aren't you just special!

Reader23 is just another id used by Showdown, Troll, VOR. He's a pathetic jerk....but that's what he wants to be. The best way to handle him is to just laugh it off and let him know you don't care what he thinks. He's a joke, howbeit, a bad joke, but a still, just a joke.
