Rodgers speaks to Kiwanis on fireproof assessment program

Jeremiah Rodgers of the Alabama Forestry Commission was the guest speaker at Tuesday night’s Kiwanis Club of Troy meeting.

Rodgers who works for the commission in Pike County educated members of the club about Wildland Urban Interface, which is where urban development meeting wildland.

According to Rodgers, the state of Alabama has a program that allows commission employees to tour homes and assess what homeowners can do to better protect homes from fire.

“We have done some (in Pike County) and we’re going to do some more,” Rodgers said.

This service is for people throughout the county, not just outside the city limits, and is free to the public.

“If we can’t answer your questions, we’ll find someone who can,” Rodgers said.

“We recommend at least 30 feet between your home and the wood line,” he added.

In other business at the Kiwanis Club, there will be a bake sale April 9 from 7 a.m. to noon at Troy Health and Rehab.
