Board approves 2009-10 calendar

The attendance calendar for 2009-2010 was approved at Monday night’s Pike County Schools board meeting.
PCS Superintendent Mark Bazzell said the calendar would coincide with the Troy City Schools attendance calendar.
School will start August 10 and students will get one-week vacation for fall and spring breaks.
Bazzell said spring break would be a week earlier and the fourth nine weeks would have more days due to the different standardized tests students have to take during this time.
For the 2009-2010 school year, the board voted to approve textbook adoptions for English-Language Arts.
In other business, the board voted to approve a request by Pike County Elementary School Principal Kenneth Bynum to attend the NAESP Annual Convention in New Orleans, La., April 2-5.
The board approved a request from Pam Franklin, Cathy Childs, JoAnne Kilpatrick and Kenneth Bynum to attend the National Reading First Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio July 14-16, and approved a request from Elizabeth Grubbs to attend the Partnerships for Indian Education Workshop in Norman, Okla. April 17-19.
The board also agreed to pay transportation expenses for Goshen High School’s track team to attend for the 2A sectional track meet in Smith Station April 24-25, and the transportation for a group of Troy-Pike Center for Technology students to attend the 2009 State Leadership Conference, Skills Championships and Career Expo at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center in Montgomery April 29-30.
In personnel actions, the board voted to approve Melma Jordan’s retirement as teacher at Goshen Elementary, effective June 1; Robert Hall’s retirement as band director at Goshen High School, effective June 1; Ann Barbaree’s retirement as dropout prevention adviser at Goshen High School, effective June 1; Carrie James and Janie Sharpe’s retirement as teacher aide at Pike County Elementary, effective June 1; Ramona Watson’s retirement as executive director of the Pike Regional Child Advocacy Center, effective May 1; Bonnie Brown’s resignation from her position in the accounting department in the central office, effective June 1; Howard Ballard’s resignation from his position as Alternative Learning Center teacher, effective May 31; Ruby Green’s resignation from her position as CNP assistant at Pike County High School, effective March 27.

It won't be the same for many children without Mrs. Sharpe there everyday. I have known her through being friends with her children as we grew up and my child was blessed to have her around her when she was at Banks. She is a very special and unique person. Enjoy retirement Mrs. Sharpe you deserve it.
