GHS coach search finished

Published Tuesday, June 30, 2009

The search for a new head football coach at Goshen High School has come to an end...at least until February.

In a special meeting of the Pike County Board of Education Monday Superintendent Mark Bazzell opened a discussion about the vacant position and told the board that he is going to recommend the implementation of an interim coach starting this month.

“This has been a long and difficult two weeks,” Bazzell said. “We need to put all of this behind us and move forward on what is best for the kids.”

Bazzell had a recommendation for the head coach spot two weeks ago, but a temporary restraining order from the concerned citizens of Goshen stopped the board from making a decision on the Goshen job.

That issue was settled and the BOE is now moving forward with the hiring of a new head coach and Bazzell wanted to hold the special meeting to let the board know about what he will be recommending. Bazzell will recommend longtime Goshen assistant coach Bart Snyder to take over as head coach of the Goshen Eagles on an interim basis. Snyder will be the head football coach and athletic director for the upcoming football season and the BOE will re-advertise the head football coach job in February of 2010.

Snyder will begin work as the AD and head coach July 13 if approved by the board. He has been a coach at Goshen for the past 18 years.

“My biggest and No. 1 concern is to give those student athletes in Goshen some clarity about what the rest of the summer and what the next football season is going to look like,” Bazzell said.

Lets pray when February 2010 rolls around we will NOT have to go through the same thing we went through 2 weeks ago. I hope the boe & Dr. Bazzell follows proper procedure & have all their ducks in a row. Congratulations Coach Snyder & the enitre football team & coaching staff @ Goshen! GO EAGLES!!!!!!!

Well, Well, now Bazzell cares about the kids at Goshen, Ha! Bazzell cares nothing about the kids at Goshen, just ask them if he was there to congratulate them after they defeated Pike County High last year in Brundidge. No! He was to busy running to the Pike County locker room to console the kids from Brundidge. And while we are at it, Bart Snyder is a good man and a great leader, but will he be afforded the same commitment to winning in Goshen that the new Coach in Brundidge has recieved (Not from local funds, but from Bazzell and the BOE itself). Things like Assistant coaching hires sometimes without positions even available, thousands of dollars of new weights, new locker room, new uniforms, no real teaching assignment for head coach? Obviously Bazzell can't afford to do any real upgrades in Goshen, He is spending all the money in the Pike County High School football program. Lets hope that Bazzell and the BOE really care about the kids but care about them equally. Give the kids at Goshen the same chance that other kids in the system get. Time will tell!

Pikemom04, I'm hoping that when they re-advertise Bart will apply and having had the head coaching experience will be a front runner for the job. I can honestly say of all the people I've worked with at GHS, lived around in Goshen, and know in the Goshen/Henderson area, Bart Snyder is one of the nicest, most caring, bravest, and most real person I've ever met. He is a good choice too because the kids at Goshen respect him because of his character not because of intimidation or anything else. Good luck Bart!

Congratulations Bart. You will have our support. I do not believe that Robyn wanted to have all the things that have happened with this job, because he is also a very nice person having come from the same family involved. Wish him the very best in whatever he chooses to do and give them both all the support and prayers they need.

I'm with you turtle. Let's make sure as parents, teachers, & residents of Goshen we make sure that the boe & Dr. Bazzell consider our children & whats best for them. Hopefully Coach Snyder will take he Eagles to a great season & the State Championship so there will be no more doubt that Coach Snyder is the right choice for the Eagles.

the only way to make sure that the boe and Dr. Bazzell consider our children is to be at the board meetings and to show that we care for our childern the way the board says that they do. to the board come up with some way to let the parents know when something is being met about .
even one a one day meeting you can put it on the web. site some of us do look at that site for info.

gob13, you can go to the Pike County Board of Education website, click on board members and it lists the dates and times of all upcoming meetings (including provisional meetings), as well as the agenda on the day of the meeting. You can also go back and view past meetings minutes as well. The next meeting is July 13 at 5:30pm.

If this was a provisional meeting the June 29th is not listed.

I know Bart personally and he is a good coach. I'm really happy for him, he is finally getting his chance as head coach. I just can't believe it took this long. Hopefully it will be more than just an interim position. Good luck Coach Snyder!!!

Let's drop the interim title now...Bart is the best choice for Goshen. He cares for the kids and will do what is right for Goshen High School. Bazzell did the right thing doing this now so an offense and defense and a real direction can begin at Goshen. As a GHS Fan I am very excited about the season and know Bart will lead this bunch all the way to state...GO EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this was a special meeting called specifically to address this issue, gob13 but I could be wrong, but that may be why it wasn't listed on the site. It does mention in the article the meeting was called to let the BOE know Dr. Bazzell wanted to recommend Bart at the July meeting so that's what I'm going by. Go get 'em Bart!
