The Troy Pre-Minor Tournament team all kneel for a prayer after a 16-2 win over Luverne Friday night in the first round of the sub-district tournament. The Trojans are raising money for the Troy Miracle Field project.

The Troy Pre-Minor Tournament team opened strong in its campaign for the Troy Miracle League.

The group of 8 year olds playing for something other than baseball beat Luverne 16-2 and smashed 30 hits along the way.

“They raised a lot of money tonight,” Troy head coach Frank Scarbrough said. “We had a lot of fun and we raised money for something bigger than baseball.”

The “something bigger” is raising money for the Miracle Field the Troy Recreation Department has in the works. Scarbrough wanted to challenge his players to get a sponsor for the donation. For each hit the players get, the sponsor will donate a certain amount to the Troy Miracle Field fund.

“All of the kids played hard out there and I am so proud of them,” Scarbrough said. “It is good to see them want to succeed for someone else.”

The Trojans may be playing for Miracle Field, but Scarbrough said it does feel good to win the opening game of the tournament.

“We are not out here to ground the other team in the dirt and it was good to see a smile on the other team’s faces when we shook hands,” Scarbrough said. “They seemed to already have forgotten about the game. But this game was a good one to getour kids relaxed.”

Scarbrough may not be the one relaxed if the team wins this tournament.

“I just found out if we win district they are going to shave my head,” he said.

Luverne actually struck first in the game with two runs in the first inning, but Troy wasted no time answering with six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Tristen Carter, Noah Lowery, De’Quavian Toney, Brock Huner, Jackson Giles and Laertis Brantley each crossed the plate in the first inning. Neither team scored in the second inning and Troy added four runs in the third inning and five in the fourth for the win.

Daniel Phillips, Huner, Will Reeves and Cody Hollis each scored a run in the third. Carter, Lowery, Toney, Phillips, Huner and Reeves scored in the fourth.

Troy plays at 6 p.m. today against the Greenville Americans who had a bye into the second round.
