Brundidge Councilman Griffin to face trial on assault charges
Published Friday, June 19, 2009
Brundidge City Councilman Arthur Lee Griffin will face trial July 16 on charges of assault third degree stemming from an April 2 incident in Coffee County.
Griffin pleaded not guilty to the charges, which come as a result of a traffic stop involving Alfred Schultz of Ozark. Schultz, who signed a warrant for Griffin’s arrest, claims Griffin assaulted him by “shoving a shotgun into his neck while (he) was in handcuffs,” according to the warrant.
In a previous interview, Schultz’s wife, Anna Schultz, told The Messenger someone allegedly followed her husband in his truck, as he was leaving his job at the Wal-Mart Distribution Cente.
The alleged incident ended in Coffee County, where Anna Schultz said the Brundidge Police Department pulled her husband over, told him to get out of his vehicle and handcuffed him.
Griffin, through attorney Joe Lampley, has filed several motions with the court.
Among them, requesting all evidence prosecutors plan to use against Griffin before going to trial. In addition, the defendant has filed a motion for “disclosure of impeaching and exculpatory evidence,” meaning Griffin requests any statements from any involved party who may have promised to not prosecute this case.
If Griffin is convicted, there will likely be no reason for him to be removed from office, said Ken Smith, general counsel for the Alabama League of Municipalities.
“If it was a felony charge it might remove him from office, but not with most misdemeanor charges,” Smith said.

Where will the trial be held, in Elba or Enterprise? Why was the stop made? Dose the Brundidge Police need help to make a stop? Was Mr. Griffin going hunting? Dose Mr. Griffin have a police record?

It's only a misdemeanor to push or hit someone in the back of the neck with a shotgun?

Whose truck was Griffin's stolen generator in again?
Oh yeah, the guy who took it after Griffin evicted him

Why is Griffin facing trial and Schultz not facing trial for theft or possession of stolen property? I do not know Mr. Griffin is he a law enforcement officer, besides being a councilman? Has Mr. Schultz been arrested and placed in jail?

I have been trying to find something in past articles about a stolen generator. If Mr. Griffin has no faith in the Brundidge Police Dept. maybe he should have contacted the Pike County Sheriff Dept or the Troy Police instead of taking the law into his own hand. The next article say TPD made an arrest in an theft case.

I don't remember reading about a generator being stolen.

What is a Cente?

I don't remember anything about a generator either WDM.
What a crazy mixed up affair!

Blue-Sky , please go back and read the article and it is self explanatory.

elvis - I did read the article and it had "Wal-Mart Distribution Cente". My question was, what is a Cente? Get it? Oh well, what difference does spelling make today anyway?
Posted by elvis2 (anonymous) on June 21, 2009 at 1:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Most of us drop more than one letter quite often plus misspell words so one missing letter is not something you want to spoil a beautiful day over.
Posted by BOOMERSOONER (anonymous) on June 21, 2009 at 3:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree, it is a beautiful day Elvis2.
Posted by Blue_Sky (anonymous) on June 21, 2009 at 8:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Well elvis, most of us are not in the newspaper business. There should be proof reading to end the endless errors made in this on line paper. If that ruins your day, it was headed in the direction anyway.

We usually get the "gist" of the story anyway whether or not there are a few misspelled words here or there.
I'm not going to lose sleep over it <s>

Blue-Sky ,This is a debate that has been run to death but let me try to explain it in very simple terms . One, this forum is not an English class. Two, most of us are not pros. either . We all make mistakes . Third , you might get a better response by contacting the person who wrote the article than complaining on this forum . Notice at the top of the page it list depts. you may contact and if you click "Contact Us" , you will get a list of all the Messenger employees along with contact infomation . As Bamabunny stated we get the gist of the stories anyway . Some call that using your mind. If you read other newspapers or magazines you'll find the same problem exist nation wide .

I agree elvis.
It was usually Troll that would point out misspelled words because he could not find anything else to make trouble over at a particular time.....even though he himself misspelled some words.
It could be too that the reporter did have the article proof read before it went to print....therefore leaving the article at the mercy of the print setter.
If it upsets you so much Blue_Sky....then as elvis said...email...write.....or call the Messenger and complain.
Or as a last resort...don't read the paper at all because it obviously bothers you.

elvis2,bama,that is why I call you my friends (good old common sense)I read the Troy Mess.,Dothan Eagle and Enterprise Ledger daily and they all make mistakes.
And blue_sky no one is making you read the paper.

Not at all WDM....no offense taken <s>
I'll send an email elvis and try to find out if everything is ok.

Would appreciate that Bamabunny . He always had a sensible comment to make and frankly I miss seeing his name in this forum.
WDM , I consider it a compliment.

I agree elvis....already sent an email.

WDM and/or Bamabunny, no one is making you read this paper either. You and others - not sure you all aren't the same person - get real sensitive when comments are made on the elementary school subject of spelling - guess grammar wasn't you strong suit either, huh?. Don't let such comments upset you. I think that you are humerous.
Posted by WDM (anonymous) on June 22, 2009 at 4:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)
blue_sky in you second comment to elvis2 your wrote
"it was headed in the direction anyway"shouldn't that have been in that direction? Your not as smart as you think you are.I had rather be humerous than a butt-hole.
And thanks for the compliment thinking me and bama are the same person.

For Blue_Sky
Actually I did very well in school and in college. I overlook small spelling errors that people can make. I just don't complain about them.....I read the story...and if I want to I comment about it and then move on Troll.
BTW....allow me to quote you....
"Don't let such comments upset you."

Thanks WDM <s>

Blue-Sky , you are one hard headed fellow . Go back and check your own errors in your last post , then slap yourself upside the head . Yes , no one is forcing us to read the paper either , we do it from choice and have for quite some time . You used you where you should have used your . You misspelled the word humorous also . Elementary english my kind sir , you must have flunked it. Now as for the comments upsetting us , why should they?? The three of us , and yes we are three separate individuals , have been around long enough that someone such as you doesn't upset us, since your more like a fly pestering someone. Now go and enroll in summer school and lets work on that elementary spelling .
Posted by uglydog65 (anonymous) on June 22, 2009 at 7:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Monk I see why you are not responding to this. A Brundidge city councilman takes the law into his own hands, who dose not have faith in the Brundidge police dept. and is accused of putting a shotgun to the neck of a handcuffed prisoner and the big complaint here is that an r was dropped.
Posted by Blue_Sky (anonymous) on June 23, 2009 at 8:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Just trying to inject a little humor. Did not know y'all would be so mean. Must be the heat.
Posted by Bamabunny (anonymous) on June 23, 2009 at 9:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)
For Blue_Sky
No one is being mean....we simply respond to the things you said.....like this....
"guess grammar wasn't you strong suit either, huh?"
You yourself have made errors in spelling and grammar yet you call attention to someone else for theirs. How hypocritical is that?
A typical "Trollism" and personally speaking...I don't care about any misspellings....I still get the gist of the stories......misspelled words or not....and I'm still not losing sleep over it. But if it bothers you that much....then call the paper.
You voiced your opinions and we voiced ours. So lets drop the "misspelling" issues ok?
There are more important things in life. <s>

Right again Bamabunny.
Uglydog65 , sorry for the little dispute about english but after all there isn't much to say about the Brundidge situation since there is so little infomation to go on . So far it seems to be a matter of waiting until the trial when hopefully the full story is brought out .

my goodness ya'll are all acting a little rash!! Thought this was supposed to be about the article and not each other!!!
Posted by Bamabunny (anonymous) on June 23, 2009 at 10:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Something else had to have happened that night elvis.
Just like nothing was mentioned that I saw about a "generator". If it was a stolen generator...then why was Mr. Schultz not pulled over immediately? Why was he followed and then pulled over? And if he was in cuffs....why is it alleged that a gun was held to his head?
Things just don't make sense.
This entire story just screams "there is a lot more info than was given".

To make the pile a little higher, today I heard in Brundidge it involved 2 stolen dogs (?). The problem is not just this one incident, but others that have happen in Brundidge of similar character. Some reported in the Troy Messenger and some not, but they seem to kind of disappear, but this got out of Brundidge and out of Pike County.
Posted by uglydog65 (anonymous) on June 23, 2009 at 8:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Bamma I don't think there is anymore in this story by itself, unless you consider that some people think they are above the law or have no understanding of the law at all.
Posted by Bamabunny (anonymous) on June 23, 2009 at 9:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree dog.....and it will be extremely interesting to see the outcome of this trial.
I think so too that there are some involved here that think they are indeed "above the law". And now it seems that 2 stolen dogs are involved? Geeeeeeeez Louise!
I'd like to know why a Councilman was even involved in a pull over and arrest? Are we not supposed to let the police handle such things? I doubt he was just a "ride along".
Posted by uglydog65 (anonymous) on June 23, 2009 at 9:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I think I know what happened, but that amounts to nothing. I would like to know where the actual stop was made. I think everyone is aware that 231 goes through the corner of Coffee County.

With the trial just a few days away, I wonder if anyone can offer more details than I've seen yet.
My husband and I were planning to move to Brundidge soon for our retirement. This incident has put our plans on hold. We have one good move left in us, and we don't want to make the mistake of moving to a corrupt community, and then find ourselves stuck there, too old and frail to move one more time.
