Three charged in Dollar General attempted burglary

Published Monday, June 15, 2009

Three Talledega men have been arrested for allegedly burglarizing the Dollar General Store on South Three Notch Street in Troy last week.

Dekota Whitson, 23, Zachery Cheeks, 18, and Deangelo Shears, 24, are said to have allegedly burglarized the local business early last Friday, according to Troy Police Chief Anthony Everage.

Around 4:30 a.m. Friday, Everage said a Troy Police officer noticed the lights off inside the store, though they are typically left on. The officer checked the rear entrance of the building, when he saw the individual attempting to exit the building.

When the person recognized an officer, he ran through the store and out the front door.

Everage said that individual, who was allegedly Whitson, was picked up on Love Street.

Cheeks was found hiding in a 1988 Oldsmobile in the parking lot next to Dollar General, and Shears was later apprehended at a Waffle House on U.S. Highway 231 North.

The three all face charges of burglary third degree with bonds of $15,000.

They were first transported to the Troy Police Department Friday and then later transferred to the Pike County Jail.

Shears is on probation in Talledega County and is being held without bond pending probation revocation proceedings, Everage said.

Good work TPD. How about a public canning on the public square so we don't have to feed and house them for several years (which has little affect). I believe that some people would like to improve there golf swing in this manor (thanks Alva).

How bout public punishment in a Pillory with a make shift driving range dog?

How absolutely observant of that police officer to notice the lights being off.

This tells me that our police officers certainly know what would appear to be out of character when patroling...and on the ball even at 4:30 am.

Who needs an alarm when the police are on tha ball like this! Good work TPD!

Good job officer Donnie Barron for staying alert and Mark Ross for helping to catch the criminals. We need more good officers like you.

For the love of Pete man!!!! What were these guys thinking? If you steal something from the dollar store it will probably have a street value of...oh let's say $1. My guess is that 3 guys taking only what they can carry might make off with about $30 worth of loot. That's crazy! That's not very much money considering that right about now those 3 are probably being told by their cell mates that the new girls have to sit down when they pee!!!

I do hate to give the TPD props for anything but they actually did good here. I will give Donnie credit but no way for Mark. Hey this is a big step for me!! But then again third shift is always on top of their game!
