Junior boys win first game

Published Saturday, July 18, 2009

The Troy Junior Dixie Boys tournament team was victorious in its opening round game at the state championship tournament in Dothan Friday.

Troy defeated Westside of Mobile 13-3 by mercy rule in a game that was stopped after five innings.

The mercy rule-shortened win was the fourth straight mercy rule win for Troy, as they defeated all three of their district tournament opponents by at least 10 runs.

Troy led 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth and was able to score five runs in the home half of the fifth to end the game and move into the winner’s bracket.

Troy will now move on to face Opelika in the second round Saturday at 6 p.m.

Opelika will come into the game with a slight advantage, as it received a first-round bye and will have a fresh pitching staff to combat Troy’s offense with.

The winner of Saturday’s game between Troy and Opelika will move on to face the winner of Friday’s Hueytown-Hartselle matchup at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
