Charlie Tisdale showed the rest of the Troy Minor Americans that Noah McDaniels was hittable Thursday night in Brantley.
Tisdale blasted a three-run home run off the New Brockton ace that put Troy up 3-0 in the sub-district championship game.
McDaniels struck out 16 Trojans in the team’s first meeting of the tournament in a 3-1 New Brockton win Monday, but Tisdale and the Trojans hammered out 11 runs on 15 hits in the third meeting of the teams for an 11-5 victory.
“We basically told these guys that pitching a game like that is not an everyday thing,” Troy head coach Ken LaBrant said. “We told them it would be hard for him to do that again.”
And it was, but LaBrant said after seeing McDaniels the first time he made sure his team was ready for the second meeting.
“We had them in the batting cages this morning and we were throwing hard to them,” LaBrant said. “We wanted to make sure they were ready and they tore it up. They did great out there tonight.”
LaBrant said the Trojans had the complete package Thursday night with great hitting, great defense and great pitching.
Jack LaBrant started the game on the mound for Troy and he went five innings, struck out nine batters, walked six and allowed three runs on four hits. Jackson Murphy finished New Brockton off with two strikeouts in the final inning of the game.
Ken LaBrant said winning the sub-district tournament is one step on the ladder.
“This feels good, but we now have to focus our attention to the district tournament,” he said. “And these kids understand that you have to take it one game at a time and not get ahead of ourselves.”
No matter what lay ahead for the Americans, LaBrant and the rest of the Troy team will enjoy the Fourth of July weekend as sub-district champions.
Tisdale’s home run was not the only big hit for the Trojans. Nick Lewis went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for Troy.
Jabronski Williams went 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Murphy went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Hunter Reeves was 2-for-3.
Murphy Renfroe went 1-for-2. Trae Sullivant was 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Dawson Hamlin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Reed Johnson was 1-for-3 with one run scored.
Troy will open play in the district tournament July 10 in Geneva.
