Singleton remains in Pike County Jail

Singleton faces assault charges for critically injuring Mobile couple

Published Monday, January 19, 2009

Major Wilbur Singleton remains in the Pike County Jail, after he turned himself into law enforcement last weekend, said Pike County District Attorney’s Chief Investigator Dwight Holley.

Singleton, who faces two charges of assault first degree and one count of failure to aid the injured, is held on a $150,000 bond, after he allegedly left the scene of a U.S. 231 wreck that critically injured two.

Holley said Singleton was taken to the emergency room upon arrival, where he was examined and released back to law enforcement Saturday.

“He had some abrasions and bruises, but they were just minor injuries,” Holley said.

Holley said the assault charges stem from Singleton using his vehicle as a weapon and greatly injuring Henry Lee Whitaker and his wife Joann.

“He seriously injured two individuals, and if they had not been treated quickly, there’s a great chance they might not have survived.”

But, according to the Whitacker’s niece, Jessica Hipps, the couple may be released from the hospital later today or Wednesday.

“They are in good spirits and thankful to be alive,” Hipps said.

Since Singleton has two prior felony convictions, his sentencing will be more severe if he is convicted.

In September of 2001, Singleton pleaded guilty to distribution of marijuana and distribution of cocaine. Holley said he also pleaded in 2007 to sexual misconduct, which is a misdemeanor.

Singleton has the right to plead guilty at any time, but Holley said he doesn’t anticipate he will.

“With those prior convictions, I can’t see him pleading right now,” Holley said. “I think he will go before a grand jury and then go forth if there is an indictment.”

No other arrests have come forth from this instance yet, but Holley said the DA’s office is continuing to investigate and will prosecute persons who may have assisted in harboring Singleton.

With the nature of those prior convictions - Throw the book at him!!!!! He does not need a 4th chance (if found guilty)!!!!!!!!!

The criminal said, "We deserve to die for our evil deeds, but this man has done not one thing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom." And Jesus replied, "Today you will be with me in Paradise. This is a solemn promise."

Jesus would forgive him for his evil deeds if he asked for forgiveness, but would not free him from his sentence.

Well said, uglydog65. Very well said!

I never mentioned forgiveness of his sins. I am referencing his inability to obey the law. This is his fourth time. He obviously was given three chances because he was a free man when he whammed into that car. He should pay the price for his negligence!!! If he asked for forgiveness between him and God then that is between him and God not between him and all the citizens of Troy he is putting in harms way because the courts are giving him chance after chance. Again, I was not referencing his religion in my first post.

Now, no one is asking that he be put to death, they are just asking that he take responsiblity for his sins and be taken off of the street so that he can longer harm those on the road ways with him. Jesus told this lady to go and sin no more, which is what we are asking this person to do. He has been asked several times and now he has to face his earthly consequences. Does Jesus still love him? Yes. Does Jesus still want him to repent of his sins? Yes. Does Jesus still want us to pray for him and those around him?Yes.

You know the thief on the cross asked Jesus to forgive him and Jesus did. The thief also had to face the earthly consequnces for his actions and therefor died an awful death on the cross.

So those who refuse to obey the laws of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow.

I would like to make one comment now that Singleton is back from his vacation, and in jail.
Just about all of these 'dope heads' that use MySpace claim that they are Christians. You can see this in the web site. But one of the first things that these people will do after getting on dope is to get a tatoo. And many of these have satanic meanings, including representations of the devil. My next door neighbor, and 'dope head', got a large 666 tatooed on his back. He is also a Christian. Another local has the entire Lords Prayer on his back and is adorned with images of the devil on his chest and stomach.
Now I ask you, what would Jesus say?

Well BF2C1

Personally I would say those guys are hypocrites...and a little screwed up in their own minds.

Posted by spot (anonymous) on January 21, 2009 at 10:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Showdown,
There is a difference between forgiveness and punishment. I certainly would be the first to forgive any wrongdoer who asks for forgiveness. Christian forgiveness does not mean lack of punishment. If no one was ever punished for crimes anarchy would result. My belief is that God wants us to have an ordered society without criminals running rampant.

I agree it sounds as if their tattoos are a bit hypocritical but as a tatt lover and owner, I can say I am not a "dope head" was perfectly lucid, sober, and aware of what I was doing when I got mine, and think that my tatts make me no less of a Christian. Of course, I don't have satanic imagery tattoos either rather a flower. I know this has nothing to do with this article but please don't judge someone simply because they have tattoos, some of the best people you will ever meet are covered with them.

Posted by Bamabunny (anonymous) on January 21, 2009 at 11:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Having a tattoo does not make a person bad. Each to his own.

I think people from older generations at times relate back many years ago when a tattoo was unsually seen on people like Hell's Angels and when they had a bad rep.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT TATTOOS?
by Betty Miller

The Bible warns us against tattoos in Leviticus 19:28 (Amplified) which says, "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord."

I know some will have a hard time receiving this teaching because tattooing has now become an accepted practice in our society. However, just because society approves of something does not make it right in God's eyes. Our society at large, also approves of abortion and divorce as well. However, the Bible makes it clear that God doesn't approve of these things.

In sharing this teaching, I am not trying to condemn anyone who already has a tattoo; but rather to warn those who are considering getting one. God loves us, and even when we make mistakes in poor judgment, He doesn't condemn us, but rather tries to help overcome the consequences of those mistakes. Having a tattoo will not keep anyone from serving the Lord. We know some very godly people who have tattoos and are serving the Lord and their tattoos do not interfere with what God is doing through them. Anything Satan tries to use for evil, God can turn and use it for good when we commit totally to Him. God takes us as we are and uses us if we will yield to His will. God will use any of us when we come out of the world and start serving Him with our whole hearts to do His will. Our past is under the blood of Jesus and the sins and mistakes of the past will not hinder our God in our serving Him. Only a hard and unrepentant heart keeps us tied to the old life.

There are many dedicated and sincere Christian people that have tattoos. This article is not meant to say they do not love the Lord. God not only can use them, but does use them. The issue is not whether God can use someone, but rather should Christians pursue getting tattoos? Just because something is popular does not mean it is right. We should always examine things by the "roots and the fruits" of the thing in question.

....Remember, God doesn't hold us accountable for what we don't know.

Sure hope your eternity insurance policy cashes in. Maybe it time to start thinking humans aren’t the center of the universe. I’m starting a new religion. Please bring you tithe, “insurance premium” to me once a week, and I’ll grant you everlasting life.

It will. Only God can offer eternal life.

Well, I have tatts and will be getting more. I have also discussed this very thing at length with my pastor and other pastors and the general consencious is that our actions towards others, and our strength in faith is what will get us in to Heaven, not how many tattoos I have or don't have. We can randomly pick any verse in the Bible and use it to fit our own needs or wants or to condemn others. Also as a child I associated tattoos with military people because my grand-daddy had them and so did his brothers and they were all military.

Posted by Bamabunny (anonymous) on January 21, 2009 at 7:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The most impressive tattoo I have ever seen is on my brother's left upper arm. He never liked tattoos and when I saw the bottom part of it sticking from his sleeve I about fell over.

When he showed me....my mouth dropped. It was of his liittle boy that was hit and killed by a drunk driver many years ago when he was 3. What a beautiful job the artist did. It looked like a photo it was so good.

Troy Messenger is a rag and a joke. They allow people like Showdown to use profanity, insult others who comment, and ruin what could be a decent forum. Shame on you Troy Messenger. If you don't like this go ahead and delete my account and keep your precious Showdown.

Monk.....

Showdown is an ignorant arrogant child trying to appear mature. He posts like he does because he cannot do it to people in person because they would knock a lot of sense into him and he's too chicken to say things to them. So he compensates to get what he thinks is his superiority fix in comment sections.

When he thinks he has rattled someone....that makes his day. When he gets older and more mature...he will look back and be very embarrassed at the things he did and see himself as a complete flunky.

I don't think the law is dead.

Posted by Virtuous (anonymous) on January 23, 2009 at 8:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

@turtle

My comment was not meant to condemn anyone. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." Romans 8:1

I never thought/heard about tattoos being mentioned in the bible until a couple years ago. Two ladies(I'll call them Janice and Sue) who go to my church and I were talking about them one day.

I said I always wanted one but was too afraid. I don't deal with pain very well. Janice said she wanted one too. Sue said she has one but wouldn't get another one because God said we shouldn't have one. I didn't (well couldn't)believe that. Janice said He only said we shouldn't put tattoos of the dead; then Sue said He said any markings.

Being that I never read anything about them, I searched for it so that "I" could know for sure. The above article and SCRIPTURE is what I found. So, Janice and Sue were both right.
