Troy Board of Education honored at luncheon

Members of the Troy City Schools Board of Education were honored Thursday at a luncheon at Charles Henderson High School as part of school board appreciation month.

“The Board of Education has done so much for us, and they work tirelessly, without pay,” said Betty Waggoner, an employee of Charles Henderson High School who helped organize the luncheon.

“We just want to give a little bit back to them.”

Chef Will Shurett, the culinary teacher at Charles Henderson High School, had his students plan the menu for the luncheon.

Each class period had a hand in creating a menu filled with the best of what Shurett deemed “soul food.” The menu consisted of hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, butter beans and green beans with bacon.

The meal was entirely made by the students with Shurett overseeing his students’ work.

“This is just great food. It’s really fantastic,” said Judson Edwards.

Even Shurett was impressed with his students’ efforts.

A pound cake made by Leandra Flowers, a student at CHHS, received rave reviews.

“This is absolutely the best pound cake I have ever eaten,” Shurett said.

Waggoner was glad to be able to do something to show the Board of Education the appreciation that the school felt.

“They have just worked so hard for so long, without very much thanks paid to them, and this is just a way we can show we appreciate them for their efforts,” she said.

The members of the Board of Education are: Ron Pierce, president; John Parker, vice president; and members Roxie Kitchens, Dorotha Thomas and Edwards. Also attending were Dr. Linda Felton-Smith, superintendent of schools; David Helms, Charles Henderson High School principal; and Dan Joslyn, of Joslyn Consulting.
