PLAS named Blue Ribbon School
Published Thursday, January 8, 2009
Pike Liberal Arts School in Troy has been named one of the Alabama Independent School Association’s 2008-09 Blue Ribbon Schools.
Dee Bennett, PLAS assistant headmaster, said a Blue Ribbon school exemplifies excellence in teaching, student performance, school life and school and community interaction.
“A Blue Ribbon school winner is an excellent school involved in an on-going process of school improvement,” Bennett said. “The faculty, staff and students at PLAS know that we have great things going on at Pike Liberal Arts because we are here every day. But to receive this honor verifies to the community, our parents and prospective students that we are an excellent school. We are very proud to receive this statewide recognition.”
PLAS was one of 18 schools to receive the honor, which covers an assessment of various areas of school activity.
“The Blue Ribbon schools program is a annual recognition and there is an application process for the award,” Bennett said. “We made application on Dec. 1 and the application was reviewed by an AISA committee and we were recognized with the award on Jan. 7.”
Bennett said the assessment includes curriculum, facility, an on-going improvement plan, teacher certification, SAT scores and progress in technology growth.
“In the application, you have to give evidence in all the different areas and show that the school is working through the different areas reviewed by the committee to see if the school meets all of the criteria to become a Blue Ribbon school,” Bennett said. “To be named a Blue Ribbon school is a great honor. Headmaster Ceil Sikes and I, along with the faculty, staff and parents, have worked together for the last two years to obtain this recognition. It has been a team effort.”
Pike Liberal Arts School has 465 students in K4 through 12th grade. The school offers an advanced diploma as well as a standard diploma.
“When students reach the 12th grade, they may choose dual enrollments and attended classes at Troy University,” Bennett said. “Our students score 75 percent or higher in all subjects in all grade levels on SAT10 and we are very proud of their accomplishments.”

AISARules, please don't get on here and do that. That just makes PLA look bad and upsets people in the community which I can't say that I blame them because I don't want anyone bad mouthing my school (PLA). If I recall, you are the one that started that argument a while back on these comments. People, please excuse this idiot. He is not speaking on behalf of PLA.

Any new recruits on the horizon for PLA?

We don't have to recruit, unlike CHHS who has been out recruiting our players, oh how things have changed here in Troy.

AISARules is an idiot and should be ignored. This person should not be considered a reflection of PLAS.

@ AISARules
How do you know so much about PLAS? Being that everyone who says they are, say that you are not.

That is awesome news for PLA! PLAS has really taken some major steps forward in the last few years. They are gonna demonstrate to Pike County public schools how even the most integrated and diverse population of students can maintain high standards through hard work and discipline. Outstanding job, guys!

OK, maybe I should have said they will show the public schools how a school with a non-white student population of 0.1% can teach discipline and maintain high standards despite the horrible adversities their students face growing up in an upper middle class home. Whatever. Still, great job guys!

Good place to send your kids it has improved every year since Mrs. Sikes has been there. To be in the top 18 in the state is a very nice accomplishment for a small school.

Oh! I love the comments of some of these idiots! This is better than the Jerry Springer Show.
PLA gets a little recognition from a system that is established to try to make private schools look good without any real standards. Any fool knows these little daycare systems do not adhere to the same high standards of public schools. The football program resembles a bunch of little tinymites running around on the field playing sandlot ball.
Do not even begin to compare PLA with the real schools of Pike County.
PLA tries to present an image of being elite, wealthy, and socially superior to public schools. When, in fact, a bunch of poor rednecks are stretching their paychecks each month to send their kids to an inferior school just because of the student population.
PITIFUL!!!!!!!!

Way to go Pike!!! Some people are clueless!! We have done both public and private and private is ten times harder than public. Why do all these people think Pike is a "daycare"....come on!!!

I support all schools in Pike County--good news for any of the schools is sure better than bad--we all make choices and do the best we can--I know many very fine students and teachers at each of the schools and support them all--seems like they tend to be more civil toward one another than people on this board!

bigdaddy, you are so right . Hopefully the kids in all the schools , both private and public will come out with more tolerance than is shown by several of the commenters . Give the kids the credit they deserve whether it be public or private schools they attend . I know there is not two systems for grading a school , so PLA did earn their rating.

grunt,I wish I knew who you were I would love to kick your ass,I have grandkids in PLA and in public school which none are poor rednecks.

WDM, I noticed you have never gotten upset about comments made about Pike County Or Troy City Schools. Even when there were comments made stating or implying that PLA is superior due to the student composition. See regis comments above. I am truly sorry if I have offended you by my comments. I think you have a right to know who I am so you can state your case. Please post your name and I will be more than glad to contact you to discuss this issue if you really want to.
I am very surprised that my comments have not prompted more dicussion,

I'm not a redneck, my mom and dad work hard for me to be able to go to PLAS so I don't have to go to school with all the trash that goes to public schools around here. PLAS is where the best in pike county goes. we are told that everyday and it is true. some don't like to hear that we are better than everyone else but it is true.

I have attended both Charles Henderson and Pike Lib and both are very good schools. I think both Principals are very good Coach Helms is always fair and never shows favorites. He is very well respected and demands respect from is students. Mrs. Sikes is the same way she treats her students with respect and she is always making sure the students are doing what they are supposed to do.
Another thing about the academics they are about the same I made A's at CHHS and I make A's at PLA and both have good quality teachers. All the teachers are qualified to teach and I have enjoy learning at both schools.
Also I wish everyone would get along and support both schools or at least don't bad mouth the other one, and if you are going to don't hide behind a screen name.

Cute post Parker, just admit it we are the best in Troy and by the way you are talking in your post you know it yourself,

Well said Parker. I said before when all of the bickering was going on when PLA was playing for the State Championship that I thought the high scool students were getting on here and reading this.

I am shocked at some of these stupid people. If PLAS does good for themselves, it does not mean the other schools are bad. I myself went to the public schools, but I prefer the private for my kids. This does not mean the public schools are bad in anyway. The grades of both the school systems are a direct reflection of how they benefit the kids in our community. Both the city and private schools are a plus to our community.

Congratulations on achieving Blue Ribbon status! This does exemplify your excellence in teaching, student performance, school life and school and community interaction. Keep up the good work Mrs. Sikes, Mrs. Bennett, faculty and students.

AISARules, you are one sick person,if the truth be known you don't or never went to PLAS and God help them if you have kids. The school you or your children attend has nothing to do with the kind of person you are no more than what church one attends.

If someone is gonna be working for you one day, all they need to know is how to say, "You want fries with that?"

don't be scared to be the best. I am proud of PLAS and I'm proud to go PLAS. I hear it everyday, some of you are just afraid you might hurt the common peoples feelings, stand up and be proud of being the best around.

If you people haven't noticed there are a few people on here who just make crazy comments to stir stuff up & get people mad.

AISARules has the worst grammar and spelling of any poster on this website. Way to win the blue ribbon in that department, loser.
And while PLAS may have won the blue ribbon, they are still scared of black people. So, good luck functioning in the world!!!
P.S. You'd be poor if you lived anywhere other than this POS town.

Actually AISARules, I take that back. You are a kid. You are poor either way. Your parents, who have raised an idiot of a child with a lackluster education from a POS private school, would be poor if they lived anywhere other than this POS town.
