New surgeon, family looking forward to Troy life

Dr. Reza Seirafi is the new general surgeon in town and there’s no doubt in his mind that Troy is where he is supposed to be.

Seirafi comes to Troy from Jasper where he had a very successful practice for nine years. However, when he and his wife Trudie visited Troy Regional Medical Center and the City of Troy, they both realized that Pike County could easily become their hometown.

Seirafi is a native of New York and his wife is from South Florida. Neither of them ever considered South Alabama as a second home. Now, after just a short time in Troy, they are already at home.

Trudie Seirafi “scoped” out the city first and liked what she found.

“I checked out everything,” she said, with a smile. “I went to city hall and looked at the budget. All of the utilities are under one roof and I liked that. And there are a lot of roofs going up all over town and new companies. That is a very positive sign of growth. I visited the Chamber of Commerce and they gave me a welcome packet and were very helpful and, of course, Troy University was one of the deciding factors.”

But the deciding factor was the direction in which Troy Regional Medical Center is heading under the leadership of administrator Rusty Eldridge.

Seirafi said he is impressed by the fact that TRMC provides state of the art surgical care in a hometown atmosphere.

“In Jasper, patients came to me because they were confident in my ability,” he said. “Here in Troy, I’m following in the big footsteps of Dr. John Crosby and I will build my practice person by person.”

Seirafi is a Fellow American College of Surgeons and is board certified. He received his medical training in New York and his surgical training at the University of Florida.

The College of Medicine at the University of Florida has a Level 1 trauma center and Seirafi said the volume of surgeries and the exposure that he had to many different kinds of trauma surgeries, as well as general surgery, were outstanding training for his chosen field.

As a general surgeon, Seirafi will perform colon, appendix, gall bladder, breast, stomach, small bowel and vein surgeries and colonoscopies. His office is housed in the facility with Crosby in the Doctors Center next to TRMC.

Seirafi said he is looking forward to being a part of the Troy medical community and a member of the larger Pike County community.

“Troy has a lot of potential and the future is very promising,” he said. “It is exciting to be a part of a community like this.”

Trudie Seirafi is a physician’s assistant but has chosen to be a mom-first at this time.

The couple met at the Florida University College of Medicine when she was doing her clinicals and he was in his third year of residency. They have a 9-year-old daughter, Alexandria who is fourth grader at Pike Liberal Arts School.
