Bright's vote angers Alabama GOP

Published Tuesday, January 6, 2009

U.S. Rep. Bobby Bright wasted no time angering thousands of Republicans and conservatives in Alabama.

On his first day in the U.S. House of Representatives, the newly elected Democratic congressman from Alabama cast his vote in support of Nancy Pelosi retaining her position as Speaker of the House.

Bright, who campaigned on the Democratic ticket but repeatedly promised to be an independent thinker if elected, was quickly lambasted by the Rep. Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn), chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.

“Bright and (Parker Griffith) had a chance to show the people of Alabama that they have what it takes to stand on their own ... It is unfortunate that on their first day and their very first vote, Bright and Griffith prove that they care more about being accepted in Washington than they do about the hadworking families of Alabama, who do not share Nancy Pelosi’s liberal pro-tax, pro-gay marriage, anti-gun, anti-military views.”

Hubbard is right about the conservative leaning of most Alabamians. And, we suspect Bright knows well how his constituents feel about Pelosi’s role as Speaker.

Now, however, Bright has much more to prove to the voters back here in Alabama. With critical votes ahead, particularly as relates to President-Elect Obama’s proposed economic stimulus bill, Bright has an important opportunity to help shape the future of not only Alabama, but our nation, both short- and long-term.

We hope he’ll use that responsibility wisely.

Who was the other choice for Speaker of the House? Maybe Pelosi was the better choice? I get so sick of everyone thinking that just because someone is from Alabama they are automatically a conservative republican. I am neither republican or democrat and I am a Bright supporter. He hasn't angered me by this decision and there are far more votes to come that will affect me besides this one. Give the man more than a day before condemning his actions.

Well said, Turtle! Neither party is perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but this herd mentality of the ‘Bama GOP is typical of a host of problems the whole Republican Party is suffering from. At the rate the GOP is going they will pretty much have marginalized the party down to grumpy old white southern men. Good luck expecting a regional party to win a national election anytime soon. While the rest of the country is dealing with much larger issues and moving forward into the 21st century, the Republican Party seems bent on dragging us all back to the “good ‘ol days” of the 19th century.

I know I’m pretty much shouting into the wind (or a hurricane) in our part of the world, but if the Republican Party is to survive, they must adapt to a changing political landscape. They need to stop clinging to a 40 year old political “southern” strategy that still expects positive results in a country that has moved on to more pressing issues.

How does the old saying go? “Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results.”

I suspect there were no other nominations for Speaker. Who really cares what Mike Hubbard thinks about anything? He is a do-nothing member of the Alabama House of Representatives and he is "what-is-wrong" with the Republican Party in Alabama. I was a Republican before he could spell Republican and he in no way speaks for me. I wish Congressman Bright much success as he strives to represent all of his constituents in District II.

Why don't you, Elvis2?

Since Mr. not so Bright,as he is known in the capital city, vowed to represent the people in the 2nd district, and so in doing, recieved a winning amount of crossover votes to get elected,he owes at least a nod of thanks to the people that elected him,to either abstain,or vote a protest vote, knowing that pelosi does not represent the views of the 2nd district. I didn't vote for him,nor could I hold my nose, being a humanist, and vote for jay love, the next diety of the 2nd district.LOng winded I know, but in conclusion,he earned his nickname.

To all those here who have no idea what is going on in this country. There were two other candidates for Speaker of the house. John Boehner and Rep. Dingle.

Knowing what is happening in this country would only strengthen your argument.

Get out the crying towels. Bright doesn;t vote the way a few wanted him to. Now he wull be hanged at high noon when he comes back to the district. Get over it. Get a life. If you don't like the way he votes, the you run against him in 2010. Enough said.
