Johnson center releases schedule

Published Tuesday, December 29, 2009

The Johnson Center for the Arts has released its 2010 exhibition schedule and it’s one that Richard Metzger, executive director, said is second to none.

“We have an excellent exhibition schedule for any arts center and we are especially proud to bring this lineup of outstanding exhibitions to Troy and Pike County,” he said. “Since September 2009, we have had more than 700 students come through the Johnson Center and have held a total of 10 free concerts. That’s a good indication that the arts are important to the people of all ages in our area.”

The exhibition schedule will open January 15 with “The Alabama Clay International Presenter’s Exhibit, which will run through March 15.

“The Johnson Center for the Arts is hosting this exhibition in conjunction with the 25th Alabama Clay Conference at Troy University February 19-21,” Metzger said. “The Johnson Center exhibit will feature the works of four presenters that will be in attendance at the Clay Conference -- Juan Quezada, Lana Wilson, Mark Fields and Brian Nettles. The quality of works that will be in this exhibition is of the highest caliber. We are extremely fortunate to bring an exhibit of this quality to the Johnson Center for the Arts.”

A concurrent exhibition at the Johnson Center will be “Soul’s Journey: Inside the Creative Process.

“The exhibition features the work of 22 contemporary artists living in the South – from Virginia to Florida, and working in ceramic, fiber, glass, metal and wood,” Metzger said. “It originates from The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design of the University of North Carolina.”

The spring exhibition schedule is just as impressive as the winter schedule. The month of April will feature underwater baptism photographs by Caroline Davis and landscapes by Sandra Hicks Barnes.

The 69th Watercolor Society of Alabama Juried Exhibition will be shown May 15-July 17 in the upper level of the Johnson Center. The lower level gallery will feature the works of Steve Savage and Ted Metz in June.

The months, August through November, have been set aside to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Troy Post Office building.

“The ‘Looking Through the Lens: 100 Years of Photography,’ features the exhibits, ‘Holman Johnson: Pike County and Beyond’ and ‘To Remember a Vanishing World,’ D.L. Hightower,’” Metzger said.

“Both of the exhibits should create a lot of interest from local residents as well as those from outside the area.”

In November, the Johnson Center will feature, “Handed Down and Passed Along,’ an exhibit of generational family artists from the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan.

In keeping with tradition, the 2010 Exhibition Schedule will close with the Christmas Tree Extravaganza in December.

Metzger said the Exhibition Schedule from beginning to end has been carefully designed so as to bring top quality exhibitions to the Johnson Center.

“The Johnson Center prides itself in offering the highest quality exhibitions and at no cost to those who want to explore and appreciate the arts,” he said.

“We invite everyone to be a part of the cultural arts movement in Troy and Pike County during 2010 and beyond.”
