Health Care a hot topic

Residents discuss health care concerns with Congressman Bright

Congressman Bobby Bright made another stop in Pike County Wednesday to hear what local residents had on their minds.

And, unlike many of the stops before, health care issues were on the top.

“I think probably health care has been very much discussed,” Bright said, as he mingled with those gathered at Sister’s Restaurant Wednesday afternoon. “I would say 90 to 95 percent of people I’ve discussed it with are against any federal involvement in health care.”

Larry and Jo Rawson, of Troy, were some of those residents.

“I personally think the government should stay completely out of it,” Rawson said. “(Bright) needs to vote no on every one of those health care bills.

“I’m just really fed up with what’s going on in Washington, and if we don’t do something to stop then we’re going to end up in bad shape.”

Bright, who also went to Goshen Town Hall Wednesday, has been traveling throughout his district this week hearing these types of concerns.

And, after hearing what his constituents had to say, Bright said he will have no choice but to vote against any health care legislation.

“I will assure you when we get back it will be on a hot track to get voted on,” Bright said. “I have to represent my constituents and most of them are against it, and I am, too.”

Bright said while all the health care bills on the floor now go too far, he wouldn’t be opposed to some type of legislation that phases in health care assistance gradually.

“I would look at a graduated or phased in plan,” Bright said.

Health Care wasn’t the only issue on local residents’ minds.

Bright said he also heard, as he has many times since taking office, concerns over the economy and climate changes.

“People want to know what we are going to do to stop people from losing jobs,” Bright said.

Bright also brought some good news for the Pike County area — more money.

In the House this year, Bright recently worked to pass two bills that impact Pike County. One secured $5 million for the Javelin Missile, built at Troy’s Lockheed Martin. The other will allocate $500,000 to Troy University’s Health and Science Center.

I have to agree with an unknown lady on television. The government has certainly shown a "less than stellar" performance in handling medicare, medicaid may be a state run healthcare program but it's broke too. Social security has been "broke" since Jimmy Carter was president but WE THE PEOPLE should trust the government with controlling our healthcare...I don't think so! Bobby Bright say he "must vote against the bill" based on the opinions of his constituents, all I know is he better vote against it. Personally, I don't know a single soul that supports it.

I agree my2cents . We'd all better wake up before we find ourselves in big trouble with Washington making a mess of everything.

Bright said while all the health care bills on the floor now go too far, he wouldn’t be opposed to some type of legislation that phases in health care assistance gradually.

This is double-speak, be wary! How can he be against Government involvement and say this?

More: Bright said while all the health care bills on the floor now go too far, he wouldn’t be opposed to some type of legislation that phases in health care assistance gradually.

If Bobby Bright were a true conservative, wouldn't he be talking instead about "phasing out" the government role in Healthcare.

As I said, be very wary of Bobby Bright. He appears to be watching which way the wind is blowing too much, not a sign of a leader or a conservative.

I've got to disagree, robjohn. Mr. Bright is listening to the people who elected him and voting likewise. What I get out of Mr. Bright's comment about phasing in health care assistance shows that while he's against government run healthcare, he is compassionate, and willing to phase in some type of assistence for those who need it the most. Not this rushed up socialism the White House is trying to force on us. So far Mr. Bright has done exactly what he said he would. We need more politicians like him.

lol robjohn... "not a sign of a conservative" ..... you mean like John McCain??.... lol!!! Bright is conservative, he was one of the only democrats to vote against the presidents garbage "stimulus" plan... he wants to help the not so fortunate in his area.... is that against the law? is that even wrong? so basically what you think a conservative should be is someone who does not care about the people in their area??? this is a very interesting idea you have... (sarcasm) Bright is not for a government run health care plan... he told me this before he was elected and hes saying it now... did you not read what he said???

"And, after hearing what his constituents had to say, Bright said he will have no choice but to vote against any health care legislation."

he came to hear what the people wanted... as an elected official he is supposed to represent the people not his own personal opinion and that is exactly what he has done... he came in and asked our opinion...

good job Congressman Bright

We have government assistance with health care now - it is called Medicaid, Medicare. Both programs are beaurocratic nightmares.

Social Security and the Post Office are going bankrupt. GM went bankrupt despite Government intervention. Do you see a common theme? We need less government intervention, not more.
