Weekend break-ins investigated

Published Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Troy Police are still investigating 10 instances where vehicles were broken into over the weekend.

According to Police Chief Anthony Everage, several of these vehicle break-ins occurred in the parking lots of local apartment complexes.

“A number of these break-ins occurred in the vicinity of apartment complexes, and it appears those areas were targeted because of the number of vehicles in the parking lots,” said Police Spokesman Sgt. Benny Scarbrough.

Scarbrough said the first instance was reported early Friday morning, and the last on Sunday around 10:30 p.m.

One arrest has been made in conjunction with a break-in in the parking lot of Troy Place Apartments Saturday night.

Scarbrough said a 15-year-old black male was taken into custody on Aster Avenue, after a witness saw two subjects breaking into a vehicle in the apartment complex.

Scarbrough said these vehicle break-ins may be connected.

“Because of the nature of happening in apartment complexes, it would be my guess they would definitely be connected,” Scarbrough said.

According to police reports, one of the breaking and entering instances occurred Friday, seven on Saturday and two one Sunday.

Scarbrough said things from parking decals to money to cd players were taken from the cars, and some incurred damaged in the process.

The apartments were on Gibbs Street, Folmar Street and University Avenue.

In an unrelated incident, police are investigating a reported armed robbery that took place at China Town restaurant Sunday night.

Around 9:45 p.m., two subjects entered the business and ordered money from the clerks, Scarbrough said.

The suspects have been identified as a 6-foot tall, 190-pound male and a 5-foot, 9-inch male, weighing 150 pounds. Any one with information on either of these instances should contact the Troy Police at 566-0500 or the Secret Witness Line at 566-5555.
