Troy man arrested in moonshine case

Published Monday, September 29, 2008

A Troy man was arrested last week after 19 gallons of moonshine were found on his property.

Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas said around 11 a.m. last Thursday, a search warrant was served at Lot 5 of Southland Trailer Park in Troy, and when deputies arrived, they located 19-gallons of moonshine and several other items associated with it in the owner’s storage shed.

On Friday, Thomas said Jamie Vongail Thomas, 30, was taken into custody at the Pike County Jail on charges of possession of moonshine. The suspect was released on bond later that day.

Thomas said along with the moonshine, 15 empty containers with moonshine remnants, eight propane bottles and three 25-pound bags of sugar were also seized by the Pike County Sheriff’s deputies.

this guy needs to get the right people in our community to help him with his business. some of the customers are above the law and could keep the authorities off of him.

I think that we should legalize it then put a 100% tax on it to help bail out Wall Street Banks!

I don't see how anyone can drink moonshine. I can't even stand the smell of it, then again I don't drink. But for those of you that do drink moonshine or anything else.....More power to you.

The ONLY reason someone makes illegal whiskey in any quantity is to sell it and void paying taxes on it. When that happens, they are robbing all of us of tax dollars, not to mention the fact that they have no health standards of which they must abide! Yuck - throw the book at him and all those who buy from him.

DirtyRoadDweller, I'm sure he paid taxes on the sugar and yeast and whatever he originally bought in the containers. And who says he wasn't drinking it himself. As for Sanitary, you can sterilize an operating room with the stuff if its made right!

To the man that said we are stealing the tax money, 98.9% of the money made from the production of moonshine is spent back in the county from where it was made. The other 2.1% is made up from the purchase of the sugar and other supplies needed in the production. As for the man who made the comment about yeast, yeast is not necessary. On the other hand, state store whiskey is taxed but not near as much of the proceeds come back to the county. These proceeds are spent on paying the ABC agents to annoy these people trying to make extra money when they should be trying to get the crack houses, cocaine dealers, and meth labs. They won't mess with these individuals because they are scared of being shot to death, whereas, the moonshiners are not violent and will do nothing but run. These agents that they pay, cost the state more money than they ever will confiscate, therefore, resulting in lost taxes. Any other comments? I will be glad to respond with once again, the facts!

To the man that said we are stealing the tax money, 97.9% of the money made from the production of moonshine is spent back in the county from where it was made. Making moonshine is against the law.....plain and simple. Not only that but anyone drinking moonshine runs the risk of becoming very ill.

I never saw moonshine nor have I ever smelled it...but even if I had the opportunity to do so I would never drink it.

You're right, Dragonlady; stupid laws should be repealed.

inaword, don't put words in my mouth, you knew what I meant.

I agree, it is a stupid law. Whiskey is whiskey whether it is homemade or not. You can abuse it just the same. From what I heard, they don't make it like they did in the past where you can get poisoned from it anyway. I am sure any whiskey can make you ill if you drink enough of it though. Duh. We need to be focusing on the more dangerous illegal drugs. If moonshine is illegal, all whiskey should be illegal, as far as I am concerned but that will never happen.

I'm sure not everyone that makes moonshine does it in the same manner. A person still runs the risk of getting very ill if ingesting something prepared from perhaps less than favorable sanitary conditions. A still is always hidden from normal sight and many times outside in some sort of a shed built for that purpose. The people making it have money in mind and produce it with only that in mind. At least the booze purchased in stores is made under strict state guidlines and sanitary conditions...but the primary danger and risk in drinking moonshine is lead poisoning.
