Voter rolls skyrocket as registration ends
Published Thursday, October 30, 2008
Pike County’s number of new voters skyrocketed before last week’s registration deadline, but the totals would have been even higher if some people had their way.
“A lot of people have tried to register twice,” said Chairman of the Board of Registrars Evelyn Morgan.
Morgan estimated as many as 300 local voters submitted multiple applications to register, but she said most duplicates were caught when registrars entered information into the computer system. In all, more than 1,000 applications submitted were deemed ineligible for a variety of reasons.
Morgan said she has never seen that many duplicates in a presidential election. “(But) nothing’s typical about this one,” Morgan said. “It has been all on its own.”
Morgan said she isn’t sure if these voters were maliciously trying to register twice or if it was just an error. Some individuals would submit multiple applications with different names or addresses but leave their Social Security or driver’s license numbers the same.
Morgan said these errors are easy to catch, thanks to the computer software. “When (individuals) fill out an application, and they’ve already registered, we use it as an update,” Morgan said.
Others submitted identical applications, and those were just set aside, Morgan said.
In addition, Absentee Election Manager Audrey Milton said some people have tried to duplicate their absentee votes locally.
“We’ve had some duplicate applications, and it could be an error, but the computer catches them anyway,” Milton said.
Pike County Probate Judge Bill Stone said though people may have attempted voter fraud, the election equipment should ensure fewer flaws than ever.
“With the equipment we have now, there were some red flags, and the Board of Registrars were able to prevent voter registration fraud,” Stone said. “I think now and in the future we are going to see a more cleaned up voter list than we ever had before.”
The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 4 election was last Friday, and voter numbers soared.
In mid-September, Pike County had 190 new registered voters. As of last week, there were more than 2,200 new eligible voters, bringing the total well above 19,000 voters in Pike County. “There were just multitudes of people,” Morgan said. “We had about 50 people come in a day last week.”

It eases my mind a bit that the computers are able to pick up attempted voter fraud that seems to be spreading like the plague.
I wonder how many times a person was elected that should not have been because of voter fraud in the past?

I think these people's names should be listed in this article. List all names associated with the specific Social Security Numbers--that will teach them to attempt to lie, cheat and steal an election.

i dont understand how applications with "different names" but the same "social security" number arent being investigated for fraud... i mean either they are trying to pass themselves off twice or someone is using their social security number, and therefore fraud is happening either way!

I think their names should be listed also. This is ridiculous....some people will stop at nothing!

I voted twice several times before, but I was getting paid so that is OK, right?

There is a reason that only land owners used to be the only people that were able to vote.
Posted by Jack_Bauer (anonymous) on October 31, 2008 at 2:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)
OSP3W - as a black man your comment offends me b/c the land owners that were the only ones that could vote were also slave owners. I guess you would like it if only land owners (code speak for Caucasian) could vote.

Ok, lets make it a little more fair. Only people that own cars should be able to vote. How does that sound, Baller?
Posted by Jack_Bauer (anonymous) on October 31, 2008 at 2:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)
That would not work b/c then Chip Ellis, Bill Jackson, Ken Cox, etc could vote several times b/c they own so many cars.

You mean if I don't have land or own a car, I couldn't vote? Well I don't really care. O'bama will take care of me.
He is going to share the wealth and since I don't pay taxes, I will get a larger check from the government each month. Eat your heart out Jack Bauer.

Deliman, what do you mean by a larger check? Do you already get a check now?

I get a check each month bigger than a cathead biscuit.

Here we go with the race card again, Now I am offended, I am offended that I and others are being held responsible for what happened 300 years ago(code speak for RACIST). Last time I checked, airlines fly all over the world, anyone not happy here is free to leave at anytime, when something doesnt work out, its always thrown back on the days of slavery. Its over, move on, I am not giving my rights to anyone, so "whadda think about that"?

Jack_Bauer and Deliman, your comments sicken me!!!!!!! Nobody pulled a race card BUT YOU! What's so funny is that you both think Obama a normal African American guy and that's why you're voting for him! WRONG AGAIN! Don't embarrass yourself. The uneducated will be the downfall of this country! You have access to a computer, apparently, RESEARCH THE MAN!!! Tell us why you are going to vote for him. You were the first to say something racist when we were not even mentioning that. Yet caucasions are the first and ONLY to be blamed for racism. BTW...before you try and swipe another check from the government, STUPIDITY IS NOT A HANDICAP! And also, I am of both races so don't you dare say that I am being racist!

WOW!
I think that this election will be the most memorable election is history.
The key point is "who is better qualified and experienced enough to be President".
Yes I am "white" but I vote for who I think will be best for this country...and I don't care if they were "green". With only 147 days as a Senator I don't think Obama can handle the job. I don't like his ideas either but the truth is many are going to vote for him only because he is "black"...and that is wrong. "Sharing the wealth" to me just means more money out of my pocket from higher taxes.
I would like to know too how anyone can vote without a valid address?
And "deliman".......how is it that you don't pay taxes? (I'd like to get in on this one.)

Bamabunny, when I went to register in Pike Co. week before last, I had to show NO proof of who I was. I thought with everything going on I would have to have a proof of residency and photo ID. Nope, Just filled out the paper and they told me to bring ID on Nov.4th. I think there should have been a little more to it than that. I went with passport, Drivers Liscense, and Utility bill in hand! Couldn't believe they would just take my word for it when the day brfore there was a dog that had been registered!!!!

For " place2bhaha"
WOW! That is unreal. I always thought that there needed to be proof of name and address.

Has anyone wondered about the numbers quoted for registed voters?? According to the article 2,200 as of last week were new eligible voters raising the total to over 19,000 voters in Pike County. From figures furnished by the Messenger , the 2000 census listed Pike Co. as having a population of 29,605 . A estimated census in 2006 put it at 29,620 , an increase of only 15 more people . Now there are , I'm sure there are some in the county who have not registered , plus those not old enough to register , so it would appear by the figures that Pike Co. has a nearly 70 percent voter registration . That has to be one of the highest voter registratios in the State plus it seems to indicate a very low number of children . Maybe my calculations are way off but while reading the article the numbers just didn't seem to balance out .

lol alot of people are registering... but why shouldnt a homeless person be able to vote? they are indeed a citizen right? if they have a drivers license or some form of id i see no reason they cant vote... as far as spreading the wealth? bamabunny i hope you make over 250,000 dollars a year if you think its coming out of your pocket... but it'd be better if everyone just voted Nader and he won and he taxes corporations instead of us... people wont vote nader cause "he doesn't have a chance" but ill vote for him because its the right thing too do. votenader.org

If I made over $250,000.00 I'd be dictating as to what to say on here to a secretary...and have a maid...drive a better car than I do and probably be able to afford a beach house. I post on my own and I do my own cleaning...fix things that need to be fixed around here and I can't remember the last time I saw the ocean.
The money I did make however comes from my degree and hard work...and the money already gets taken out of my pocket.I paid taxes on it when I made it and I pay taxes on it while it gains interest...I paid for my social security and even that gets taxed...and now it's being given away to people not even from the US.
Where have you been?
Posted by shiftingshadows (anonymous) on November 1, 2008 at 8:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)
um, so basically you are saying the wealth is already being spread... i thought you were refering to obama's plan... as his plan is too tax people making over 250,000 a year for things like social security so it wont run out and whatnot..

If Bob Barr were president, none of this would be an issue, as most people fail to see that a federal income tax is unconstitutional, and just makes us all slaves to the country. We are forced to give away our hard earned money to the "greater good" when in all actuality a state tax would serve us better, and then pike county federal tax dollars wouldn't be building bridges to nowhere in Alaska, and paving roads in California, the dollars would be put to use right here in the great state of Alabama.

Um yes....."shiftingshadows" thanks to Hillary and the others thinking the same...yes our social security is being given away...yours and mine. Does that not bother you?
When and if Obama gets in office...I'd like to see him tax people making over $250,000.00 a year.
I have oceanfront property in Arizona too...wanna buy it?

we pay social security to others because baby boomers paid their share... but they didnt pay enough... they apparently didnt see inflation and other stuff in the future so now we have to cover them... it will be the same way when we grow up lol

It is a bit ironic that African-Americans are lining up to vote en-mass for Barak Osama on the premise that he is one of them. Barak is not an African-American. His father was African and his mother was a white American. For the militants who insist they were wronged by slavery because their ancestors were slaves the irony is even greater. The fact that Osama's father was a 20th century African suggests that he was of the tribes which sold the others into slavery.

"shiftingshadows" we pay social security to others because the Democrats voted to do so and say "come on over to the US and across the border...get legal status in 24 hours and we will pay for your food..clothing...your rent...your medical and schooling for your kids from everyone else's account". All thanks to Hillary.
You say the "baby boomers didn't pay enough"...so now we have to cover them"? Who is "we" and who is "them"? Not enough for whom? Money is taken out of one's pay check for social security and based on a percentage of what their salary is. You pay into your own account...and what you earn is now taken out by the government to pay the services I mentioned.
The "baby boomers" are still paying but the government has been dipping into it for quite a few years now and only recently decided to give it to illegals.
Where do you get the idea that that "we have to cover them"? Cover who?
Social Security payments go into an account...that's why we have social security numbers to keep it straight and to collect on it when we retire.
Inflation or not...it is your money and mine and everyone else's money that paid into it. The government is giving it to people that are here illegally...that have not lifted a finger to earn any of that and it is not their money period.
I don't know how old you are but if you are just starting out into the work force...by the time you can collect there won't be any left for you...because by that time...I'm sure payments will be bigger and more illegal people will be collecting and collecting your money too.

first off let me point out that me and you are talking about two different things, quite obvious... however you can not blame hillary clinton... for something like this to happen it would go through congress, the president, and whatnot... therefore a majority... not sure i think its 60% or so would have to vote yes on it... meaning republicans and democrats both have to vote for it... second the president would have to say yes...? so blame all of congress not just one person... but "we" me and you... are paying now because baby boomers didnt put enough up... if inflation hadnt went up so drastically and minimum wage following and whatnot, then they would have enough for themselves but inflation soared... the money is running out, we have to tax someone, obama says the people making 250,000 or more, Nader says the corporations.... McCain says "we dont need to tax anyone just cut social security programs and start taxing health insurance benefits" pick which of them you prefer and vote according :P

Some of the comments that people have been posting are seriously disturbing. this election has shown the true colors of people living in Troy. let the morals and values you believe in be the reason you vote period. neither one of these men will make change over night. AS THEY SAY LET YOUR VOTE BE HEARD.... AND THE RACIALLY STEREOTYPICAL COMMENTS ARE NOT CUTE.

I am a 22-year-old white female and I am voting for Obama. I don't see why people keep bringing up his race as a reason for voting for him. I think he has some good ideas.
If you look at our past Republican presidents - the ones that decided to not raise taxes, the economy was WAY down. The Democratic presidents we've had who were for raised taxes had better economy for our country.
As far as his "supposed" days in the Senate, here is link for you to get that straighten out:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/200...
I know the race card is constantly going to be played because people are going to bring it up, but there really is no need to. Deep down, we're pretty much the same. Our skin color holds ABSOLUTELY nothing to how we are as people! So quit using that card and for goodness sake - READ YOUR FACTS!
I'm reading a lot of the comments here and some people do not have their facts straight. Some read ONE source and suddenly know everything. I read at least five different sources before I settle on anything because I want to make sure I have my own record straight.
With that said - I like McCain just fine, I think he has some decent ideas - it's Palin I can't stand. If she is ever in office - I am moving to another country.

Lol, the problem turtle is that McCain and Obama both have a sweet way of saying one thing to a group of people and the next day saying another... personally i think Obama would be better than McCain... however i do not like either one.. they are both the typical politician... McCain is the worst one ive seen... ever... Palin is not the problem McCain is... I would have a hard time choosing if it was Joe Biden vs Sarah Palin because id actually be voting for one of them... as it is now im not... im going to vote 3rd party and this choice comes very easy because of the 2 corporate candidates being just wrong for this country... I would have supported Huckabee on the Republican side and Edwards or Clinton on the democratic side but the parties chose the two worst in my opinion and i wont support either of them...

turtlebug - You sound like any typical 22 year old I know. Legal voting age should be at least 25! Everything is so idealistic when you are young. Real life will hit you soon honey, don't worry. If your man is elected it may be sooner than you think.

Actually McCain was not doing fine... he didn't have the conservative christian vote, now he has a good bit of it... he called in palin to save the day, and she did all she could... i doubt he wanted her though, i think he would have liked lieberman instead... republian party pulled the strings and got palin... picking mccain and obama were a mistake woulda rather saw Clinton vs. Huckabee

I think Mc Cain's stratedgy by getting Palin to run was to hopefully gain the votes from women that supported Hillary.
She's feisty but I think she will cause a downfall.
I'm still hoping though <s>
