Love: Tax hike would hurt small business
Published Wednesday, October 29, 2008
State Rep. Jay Love, the Republican candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, said cutting taxes and supporting small businesses will help stabilize the economy.
“Small and medium sized businesses are the economic engines of this country, they provide 80 percent of the jobs” Love said in a speech Wednesday before members of the Brundidge Rotary Club.
A tax increase for people making more than $250,000 a year would hurt many business owners, Love said, and an increase in the capital gains tax “make it difficult for businesses to compete globally.”
Love is a former owner of 16 Subway franchises in the Montgomery area and told Rotary Club members he would take his experience as a business owner to Washington.
“We need an aggressive tax policy that encourages investment in this country,” Love said. “I think we can cut taxes and the economy with grow.”
Love is vying for the 2nd District House seat against Democrat Bobby Bright, the mayor of Montgomery.
Noting the strong role of the military in the district, Love said if he elected, he has been promised by Republican House leadership a position on the Armed Service Committee.
“I am very committed to making sure the military missions of Ft. Rucker and Maxwell Air Force Base stay secure,” Love said.
Love said he also anticipates serving on the House agriculture committee if elected. Encouraging domestic food production, and discouraging reliance on foreign food sources , “is a national security issue,” Love said.

funny, Love voted to raise taxes several times and voted against making exxon mobile paying taxes to alabama for oil they got off our shore... even made baldwin and mobile county pay 12 million dollars back to exxon mobile... good job Jay Love, keep being corporate and taking money away from Alabama... you know, i mean really who needs it? Apparently the state of Alabama doesnt need it as much as Exxon Mobile.

Shifting, wasn't it your Governor who supported the largest tax increase in Alabama history during his first year in office? The same one you're criticizing Jay Love for supporting?
Good to hear a congressional candidate actually talk about some issues for a change.

Based on what I read Exxon Mobil does pay a severance tax to Alabama. Riley just wanted to change the way it was calculated. Riley's bill was voted against 11-4. Of course Riley is coming down on those who voted against the bill because it was HIS bill. Lastly, again, Love had nothing to do with the repayment that Mobile and Baldwin counties must make. That was ordered by a judge and dealt with taxes received from 1992-2000. This is what I was referring to. Whether the committee voted for or against the bill, those taxes would still have to be refunded.
Oh and it is Exxon Mobil not Exxon Mobile. They are not a cell phone provider.
And to ghost_of_christmas_past (who I suspect an alt account of shiftingshadows), that's the facts, and if you will bother to actually read the previous comments, you will see that I am not voting for Love. Yeah, so STFU dumbass.
