Goshen High Ag Academy bid on hold
Pike County School Board looks to get barn project within budget
Published Monday, October 13, 2008
The Pike County Board of Education approved to put a bid on hold Monday night for the construction of a barn to house large animals at Goshen’s Agricultural Academy.
“We’ve bid this project twice,” said Superintendent Mark Bazzell. “The first time we bid was above the budget, and so we modified the design and the second time it still came back above the budget.”
With a $100,000 grant from the state budgeted for the construction of a large Animal Management Instructional Facility, Bazzell recommended granting permission to negotiate with the bidder.
“I’m not going to recommend that we award the bid or reject the bid,” Bazzell said.
And while one of the school system’s projects may take longer to complete, the board approved to speed another one along.
Budgeted this year, the school system put aside $50,000 to begin replacing outdated teacher computers, but Bazzell said with an Alabama Joint Purchase Program, all outdated computers could be replaced this year.
“The $50,000 set aside would basically take care of one-third of what we need,” Bazzell said. “I suggest we get all 150 computers replaced this year.”
Along similar lines, Pike County Schools will soon have more up-to-date Web sites with a new web hosting service.
“Our Web site we have now serves us well, but it’s not user-friendly,” Bazzell said. “This will give us a more professional look.”
Bazzell said the Web site, which will be hosted through SchoolinSites, will offer more multimedia opportunities, unlimited users and storage, as well as several other new features.
“We think that’s going to be a good project for us this year,” Bazzell said.
In other business, the board approved to transfer ownership of a surplus school bus to the Pike County EMA for emergency evacuations.
The bus will be transfered to be able to transport evacuees on cots in an emergency situation.
Bazzell said the county will own the bus and pay for it’s insurance and repairs, and in exchange, the school system will store the bus and upkeep its maintenance.
