The Pike County High School Bulldogs boys’ basketball team won the CenturyTel Classic in Ozark Wednesday evening with a 53-52 victory over Rehobeth in the waning seconds of the game.
Tellius Foster is known for his defensive skills, but Wednesday night he came up big for the Pike County Bulldogs on offense.
Foster nailed down a free throw with 2.4 seconds left against Rehobeth and the ‘Dawgs (2-0) clinched the CenturyTel Classic championship with a 53-52 victory in the Ozark Civic Center.
“It was a great overall team effort by our guys,” PCHS head coach Doug Holland said. “And Foster hitting that free throw was huge.”
Foster finished the game with seven points, three assists and two rebounds. He was named to the all-tournament team with fellow Bulldogs Tevin Andrews and Quay Bailey. Andrews poured in double digits in points for the second straight game with 21 and he added five rebounds and two assists. Bailey had five points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
“They just played an outstanding game and they kept the tempo up all game,” Holland said. “They did a good job of controlling the game.”
Another player who Holland normally relies on for defense, DeAndre Mathis, stepped up his offensive numbers Wednesday. Mathis had 14 points, four rebounds and one steal.
Holland said Rehobeth was bigger and more physical than the Bulldogs, but PCHS stuck with them all game in the back-and-forth battle.
“They were real big and physical inside and I thought they were one of the better teams in the tournament,” Holland said. “But the key to our win was our overall team play. Our guys who normally contribute on offense contributed on defense and vice versa. And that is what we have been stressing to the guys in the preseason. We have told them if they want to win they must do just that.”
The teams were knotted at 22-22 at halftime and near the end there were four to five lead changes, but Holland said the teamwork his Bulldogs exhibited allowed them to pull it out.
“The kids stayed focused towards the end, we came together as a team and we got the win,” he said.
Jarrod Wilson added four points, four assists and one rebound and Kendrick Jackson had four points, three rebounds and two assists off the bench.
The Bulldogs host Elba Dec. 2 for their home opener in Brundidge. Tip off is set for 4:30 p.m.

The new head coach of PCHS varsity basketball is not all he appears to be. This young man has some serious character flaws.

How can the Pike County Board of Education make an elementary school P.E. teacher head coach of one of its varsity teams? It is my understanding that a varsity coach would at least have to work in a high school. He has not been employed in the system a full school year. How has he proven himself enough to be the varsity head coach? Does he even have previous experience working with a basketball team much less coaching one. Were there no employees capable of doing the job that have worked in the school system for more than a few months? What kind of message does this send to your employees that have worked in Pike for more than a few months? Not a well thought out decision Pike Board members. Pay close attention to this holland person and make sure he has the kids best interest at heart and is not in the job to see how it can benefit him.

There was no teaching positions to hire a basketball coach. Same problem for new football coach hiring new assistants. There needs to be some new assistants for football, new basketball, new baseball coach. We need to get more players out and this will happen with some changes of the old guard. I know there will be some teaching openings next year. Look for the new coach and ad to make some major changes. He inherited a mess!

Sounds like Tomato has some personal issues with Doug. Sounds to me like he is doing a good job with the basketball team this year. I agree yet again with you bulldogfan. I also hope to see some major changes in regards to the things you mentioned. Until some changes are made with regards to some staffing, we are going to see some athletic programs continue to deteriorate at PCHS. Good for Coach Waggoner for making much needed changes.

I forgot to post the most important thing, GOOD JOB PCHS!! You make this Bulldog very proud. Keep up the good work and don't allow the politics of adults to interfere with your games.
