City regains ownership to Army Reserve building

Published Tuesday, November 18, 2008

When Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford was handed the keys to the old Army Reserve Center Tuesday morning, it was a bittersweet moment.

“We’re pleased that since this Army Reserve is no longer in use, the city is able to take the building, but we’re also a little sad because the Army Reserve was here for so many years and offered so many jobs,” Lunsford said.

The old Army Reserve building on the Elba Highway was originally donated to the U.S. Army in the 1950s, with the condition it would be returned to the city if the location became vacant.

James Wagoner, attorney with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said the notice to move the Army from Troy was announced in 2005 and went into effect earlier this year.

Lunsford said the city hasn’t determined how it will use the vacant building.

“We haven’t made a decision for it at this point in time,” Lunsford said. “This is a very prime piece of property.”

Lunsford said this city will have the property value assessed before making any decision.

“We’re going to get an appraisal on it and see what the value is because we don’t have a value on it in the deed,” Lunsford said.

Probably another Troy State branch.

I think it would be a great fire station. Not a bad idea to have another station and especially on that side of town. At times it can take 10 or more minutes to get from one side of Troy to the other. Those are wasted minutes when it comes to a burning house.

Gotta agree. The city could use a fire ststion on that side of 231.

A fire station would be a good idea. I'm sure if the city chooses to sell it, TROY could possibly buy it and use it as well just as they did with the old Wachovia building on 231 and the old Miltope building. Why would that be a problem? At least the building won't be sitting there to just fall apart.

Also with it being located there, it would be a good location for a city welcome center similar to the one in Enterprise. You'd be catching the traffic that goes to and from the beaches that way.

With all the accidents happening out on that road and the new subdivision and existing subdivisions, it would be a great firestation. You could also create an EMS/Ambulance center there complete with dispatch center.

I agree, great place for a fire station plus it should be large enough for someother city needs.

Yes fire station, community meeting room, birthday party room (kids love fire trucks), maybe ems headquarters, admin offices for the fire department, now that is what I call a very smart and efficient idea, whatever councilman goes for this should be rewared. With so much going on at the sportsplex and all the housing whether expensive or ecomony and beach traffic, this is the way to go. Would be worth more than selling it. Then that Rescue truck will not have to go 2 miles just to get to major access roads which is the most accidental prone.

Fire station, EMS station, police sub-station, community meeting room, polling station---all sound good.

I plan on talking to a couple of council members about this I hope the rest of you will too. This is one time most of us agree which is good.

I agree, I think the building is big enough to house both a fire station and EMS.
