Start the week with good news

Published Monday, November 17, 2008

Good morning and good Tuesday.

As we begin a week with crisp, cool mornings we stop to reflect on the good news and good deeds of the week gone by and to look ahead to the week to come.

• Congratulations are in order for the Pike Liberal Patriots, who are headed to the AISA Class AAA championship on Friday. This is their first-ever appearance in the state championship game. Best of all, the championship game will be held right here in Troy, at Movie Gallery Stadium, so we encourage all of you to head out and support our hometown team.

• Congratulations, as well, go to the players on the Troy 18U, 13U and 9U girls’ soccer teams, all of whom won state titles this weekend, and the Troy 11U team, which clinched a second-place trophy. And, we want to recognize the 9U boys who didn’t make the state finals, but represented Troy well in the state tournament. What a terrific showing from these young athletes of all ages and a testament to the recreation department here in Troy. Thanks, to all the players, parents, coaches and recreation department folks who made the season and post-season play such a success.

• The Pike County Chamber of Commerce’s Holiday Open Houses begin this weekend, with merchants opening Saturday and Sunday with holiday wares and great bargains. This annual weekend event heralds the start of the Christmas season for so many of us in Pike County, so we encourage you to head out Sunday afternoon and fill your bags with gifts and your hearts with the holiday spirit.

• Congratulations, as well, to the farmers of all ages who were recognized by the Farm-City committee during the annual awards dinner last week. The event, sponsored by the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, really highlights the importance of farming on our economy and our lives here in Pike County.

Here’s hoping you have a week filled with good news and good deeds.
