Brundidge considers pay raises

City Council debates salary increase for municipal workers

Published Thursday, November 13, 2008

As the Brundidge City Council continues budget planning, city employee salaries will be one of the areas they need to address.

Every year but one since 1995, employees have been given a 2.5 percent cost of living adjustment, as well as another 2.5 percent additional raise based on merit, said City Manager Britt Thomas.

This year, as they do each year, the council will have to decide how much, if any, to boost employee salaries in the coming year.

“They don’t have to do anything, but as a general rule they always do,” Thomas said. “We’ve been very fortunate in that respect.”

In the proposed budget, employee’s salaries have been left at last year’s amount, with both merit and cost of living adjustment salaries at a total of 5 percent.

If all employees received both of these benefits for the next ten months, Thomas said the city would pay a total of $70,399 extra, but if only cost of living adjustments were given it would total $35,098.

Since the council hasn’t passed a budget before Oct. 1, the beginning of the new fiscal year, new employee benefits wouldn’t go into effect until Dec. 1, Thomas said.

Still, that’s only if a budget is passed prior to then.

The next budget meeting is next Wednesday, following the council meeting the Tuesday before.

The council will have to pass their budget in a meeting, and the next one after the hearing won’t be until Dec. 2.

I remember back when we were having the town meeting about the price of the electric bills we were told by Mr Thomas to tighten our belts because the prices were only going higher! Well, when can the citizens of Brundidge expect to see the Mayor, and The City of Brundidge begin to tighten their belts and stop hiring unneccessary employees and stop wasting our tax money? They are city employees driving city vechiles home when they could be parked and the employees use their own vechiles to drive back and forth to work and save that expensive to the Citizens of Brundidge! There is no need for the number of city employees we now have and there is no need for a pay raise nor a cost of living rasie in these hard times. In fact I believe for that fact it is time that the Mayor, City Manager, and others to consider a pay cut or cut in the number of city employees beginning at City Hall were it is over staffed!
If everyone else should tighten their belt don't you think you should follow your own advice. And why I am thinking about it what happen to the timber that was sold when the land was sold to Wal-Mart? Where did those funds from the timber sale end up? I did not see them entered back into the city's budget? And some one in your office said most of the lumber ended up at a City Employees home! We would like to see and know about those deals at the Mayor earliest convience?
