Brundidge residents will see increase in garbage collection fees
Published Tuesday, December 2, 2008
No decisions have been made yet, but the Brundidge City Council agreed Tuesday to draft an ordinance that will raise residents’ garbage collection fees each month.
Since July, the council has been paying an additional $1.40 out of pocket for each household’s garbage collection fees.
But, since the new budget has been passed, the members will now consider passing on that cost to residents.
The proposed costs ranged from $1.40 to $1.50 in discussion among council members, but no final amount has been approved.
City Manager Britt Thomas said an ordinance will be given to the council in its meeting Dec. 16 for approval, but he will leave the amounts blank until then.
Also in the meeting, the council approved the demolition of 11 dilapidated houses in the city.
The dilapidated housing project is part of a Community Block Development Grant awarded to the city, and the demolition will take place at no cost to the home owners.
A public hearing was held prior to the meeting, although no one attended to express opposition.
Thomas and Building Inspector Allen Sanders said one home owner has requested extra time to make repairs to the residence.
One of the heirs of the late Mary McGuire asked for more time to make repairs to a residence t 654 McGuire St., which is registered to McGuire.
But, the request was denied by the council, and demolition of the house will be bid right along with the others.
“We have had this same conversation two other times,” Thomas said. “We granted that, and to this point, we have not had any action on his part.”
Other homes that will be demolished were on McGuire Street, Wassau Street, East End Circle and John Street.
Thomas said the city has received this type of grant before, but it has been a while since a dilapidated housing removal project has been undertaken.
Mayor Jimmy Ramage said the removal of abandoned homes will be beneficial to the neighborhoods in the city.
“They are dangerous and a health hazard,” Ramage said. “And aesthetically, it will make neighborhoods look good.”
Thomas said the bids for construction will go out this week.
The council recessed until next Tuesday at 4 p.m., when council members will approve their portion of the ambulance contract.

Well it does not suprise me that there is a increase. Residents in Brundidge already pay a fuel charge that is almost as high as the electricity they use, only a few dollars difference. Also Jack_Bauer what is it suppose to mean to "Please DO NOT pick up any white trash"?

That is something I would like to know.... DO NOT pick up any white trash.... I find that very offensive

i think if they raise the garbage prices, then they should pick up the the trash that is only picked up once,if you going to raise it then keep the trash from sitting 2to3 days, the streets looks so bad when leaves and other trash has been in front of your door.

In Brundidge, where Jack_Bauer thinks people are "WHITE TRASH" are elderly people, sick people, no matter whether or not they are "White" or what their race is!! Thanks sexybamagirl it is offensive....I think that would be an understatement though....it is purely pathetic!

I agree with you on that alonecitygal. Anyone with a mind like that is pure ignorant. It does not matter to me if they are elderly they are people too and they to have feelings just like sick people. Trash to me it people like him and drug heads and I don't care who gets mad. It is a sad day when someone like Jack_Bauer can sit here a categorize sick and elderly people to make himself feel better. But whatever gets him through the day. If that is how close minded he is then so be it for me or anyone else to stop him. If I was the person that was able to delete comments or delete accounts he would be the First one I would delete. He never has anything nice to say about anyone and I am about sick of him.
