Valentine's will mean more than just hearts and flowers, this year.
Thanks to the Troy Rotary Club, the holiday of love will mean giving from the heart, as well as from the wallet.
The civic club is sponsoring a Valentine Gala that will serve as a fundraiser for three local charities and a fun time for all those who attend.
On Feb. 17, the National Guard Armory on George Wallace Drive will be transformed. Those who arrive in semi-formal attire will be helping the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and March of Dimes.
Rotary Club member Dr. Robert Hawkins said the club had a formal last year and chose to put that event to financing local charities.
The Valentine Gala will basically serve as a fun start to the fund-raising season in Pike County, Hawkins said.
"We wanted to do something that would include more of the people of Troy and help raise money for these charities," Hawkins said.
Hawkins is working with the charities and expects the event to be fun for all those in attendance.
"We're trying to make it more of a fun time," Hawkins said.
Figure 8 will provide entertainment in the form of music from the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
Hawkins said the Valentine Gala will be something everyone can enjoy and help the three organizations.
He said cost of the tickets will be about $70 per couple.
Mark Bazzell, chairman of the Pike County Heart Association chapter, is looking forward to the event and hopes everyone else is, too.
"This is unique because you will have all these different people working together," Bazzell said.
Dianne Smith, chairwoman of the Pike County March of Dimes, is also looking forward to the event.
"I think it's a great idea," Smith said, adding the idea of a Valentine Gala to help all three charities is a wonderful opportunity to help raise money and have fun, at the same time.
Those involved with the American Cancer Society are also marking Feb. 17 on their calendars.
Money raised through the event will be divided among the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and March of Dimes.
Anyone interested in a ticket can contact a member of the Rotary Club.
