TSU's Tynes earns weekly SFL honor

Published Tuesday, October 24, 2000

Troy State senior placekicker Lawrence Tynes was named as the Southland Football League's Special Teams Player Of The Week on Sunday a day after enjoying a career night in the Trojans' 23-21 victory over 22nd-ranked Sam Houston State.

The Milton, Fla., native connected on three of four field goal attempts and both extra point attempts for the 10th-ranked Trojans to help them improve to 5-2 overall in 2-1 in league play.

Tynes third field goal, from 49 yards, was a career long and established him as the school's all-time leader in field goals made with 39. He surpassed Ted Clemm's mark of 38 set from 1984-87 with the kick late in the opening quarter.

The four-year starter also recorded four touchbacks in six kickoff attempts, helping to keep Sam Houston, the Southland's top-ranked kickoff return team, at bay.
