A case of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle turned into a seizure of a "substantial" amount of what police believe is "crack" cocaine.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Lt. Freddie Brooks stopped a 1994 Mercury Sable on Folmar Street occupied by a black male subject. Brooks made the stop because the vehicle met the description of a car reportedly taken from Troy State University.

When Brooks attempted to place the driver under arrest, he fled the scene on foot.

Although the department has an identification of the suspect, no name is being released because of the pending investigation by the TSU Police Department.

After the subject escaped, an investigation revealed a substantial amount of substance believed to be crack cocaine inside the vehicle.

The drug case is being investigated by the TPD and the 12nth Judicial Drug Task Force.

Troy Police Chief Anthony Everage said drugs in Troy are a definite concern.

"We are concerned in the increase of illegal drug use in Troy," Everage said, adding he commended officers for taking at least some off the street.

"We will utilize all resources available to combat this problem and bring to justice those individuals involved in the illegal use of drugs," Everage said.

Officers from the Troy Police Department and Troy State University were unable to locate the driver.
