The Troy Recycling Center's annual "Let's Recycle Christmas" program saves city residents time while conserving natural resources.

The recycling center will pick up Christmas trees, gift boxes and wrapping paper from curbs around the city starting Jan. 3.

"We will continue picking up Christmas trees through Jan. 31," said Bill Rice Sr., director of Troy Recycling Center. "We will hold the trees at the landfill until Feb. 1 for anyone who wants to use them as fishing pond reefs."

The landfill is located on Hudson Street, which is off of Alabama Highway 87.

At the start of February, the remaining trees will be given to Ray Sexton and chipped to be used as mulch on city properties, he said.

"They get reused one way or another," Rice added.

He asked citizens to be patient about having their trees picked up because it will take about three weeks for recycling center workers to pick up all of the trees in the city.

To further assist city residents in cleaning up after Christmas, the recycling center will pick up wrapping paper and gift boxes along with its normal recyclables during January.

"You don't have to put the paper in a blue bag," Rice said. "It's best just to stuff it inside the gift boxes and sit it on the curb."

Rice said the recycling center is gearing up for the work.

"We do about a month and a half's worth of business in one week," he said.

The recycling center has changed its routes because of the holiday. The Dec. 31 route will be picked up Dec. 29, Rice said.

"We encourage everyone to have their wrapping paper and boxes on the curb by Dec. 29 for recycling," he said. "Unless you save it to use again, recycling is the best thing to do with your Christmas boxes and paper."
