Two Pike County men are facing murder charges in the wake of a home invasion that left a third suspect shot to death early Thursday.

Anthony Jerome Starks, 23, and Davris Mendenhall, 21, were charged with robbery first degree late Thursday afternoon and the murder charges were filed on Friday.

“As the warrant says, each man is charged with murder because he and another person caused the death of Javonte King during an armed robbery,” said Sheriff Russell Thomas.

The incident took place about 2:30 a.m. Thursday at an apartment on County Road 3061 in Springhill. King, 21, was shot multiple times with a handgun during a struggle that ensued as the trio forced their way into the apartment.

“The resident told us he heard a knock on his door and when opened the door, three male subjects rushed inside,” Thomas said.

The resident managed to recover the handgun from the suspects during the struggle, and shots were discharged both during the struggle and after the homeowner recovered the gun, Thomas said.

The three suspects fled on foot. Starks and Mendenhall were picked up and King’s body was found about 200 yards away. He died on the scene.

“No charges are being filed against the homeowner. He was acting in self defense,” Thomas said, adding that the 36-year-old man and his 1-year-old child were the only residents in the apartment at the time of the incident.

Deputies located both Mendenhall and Starks with the aid of the Troy Police Department during Thursday’s investigation. They also arrested Tyiesha Pollard, 33, on a probation violation charge during the investigation. She was with Mendenhall when he was arrested, Thomas said.

Mendenhall also had been charged with murder in Dallas County and with robbery in connection with a July 2015 incident in Pike County. Thomas said bond was revoked for the murder charge on Friday and the DA was filing a motion to have bond revoked on the 2015 robbery charge as well. Mendenhall was being held in the Pike County Jail.

Starks was being held on $500,000 bond for the armed robbery and murder charges.

Thomas said the Pike County’s Sherriff’s office was assisted by the District Attorney’s office, the Pike County Coroner’s Office, the Circuit Clerk’s Office and the Troy Police Department. The case remains under investigation.
