Pike County’s Deshon Cowling and Jerrell Jernigan were named to the Dothan Eagle’s Super 12 team, while Bulldogs head coach Doug Holland was named coach of the year for the second consecutive year.

“It felt pretty good to get named coach of the year again,” Holland said. “I give all the accolades to my staff and players. They did a great job this year.”

Holland led his team to a 20-10 record and the first ever trip to Birmingham for the semifinals.

Cowling finished with 19 points per game and four rebounds.

Lawson started slowly for the Bulldogs during the 2015-2016 seasons, but the senior finished the year averaging 14 points per game and 10 rebounds. The reward puts a nice cap on a fine senior year for both Cowling and Lawson.

“They were so humbled through the whole process,” Holland said. “They were both really excited. To see them mature through the years and to see them cap it off with football and basketball the way they did. They are a blessing to me and this school.”

“I am very excited,” Lawson said. “This is a great accomplishment. We had a great season and an emotional season. This was our last season so we wanted to go out with a bang. I am very happy.”

Being able to share this with his friend and head coach makes it that much more special for Lawson.

“It’s very special,” Lawson said. “Whatever those guys do they are going to go hard at it. It is very special to be on there with those guys.”
