“Something special because they are so special.”

That’s the way Shelia Deveridge, Troy Nutrition Center director, described the Summer Blast at the center Thursday.

The Jim Bell Trio played. The seniors sang along and swayed to the music of “Stars Fell on Alabama” and a dozen other familiar and favorite tunes.

“We want our seniors to know just how special they are so we plan special events for them throughout the year,” Deveridge said. “This is a our Summer Blast and it’s all about food, fun, fellowship and to top it off, we have the Jim Bell Trio playing for us. It’s a great day at the Troy Nutrition Center.”

Deveridge said different special events are planned for the special people at the Troy Nutrition Center.

“We do a lot of fun things,” she said. “Already this year, we’ve been to a Biscuits baseball game, and we’ve been on a fishing trip and have another planned for the fall. We do several field trips each year and the participation is always good, especially when we go fishing.”

In addition to the field trips, there are musical entertainment programs to enjoy and informational programs that are beneficial to seniors planned throughout the year.

“We have 46 clients, and some days we’ll have a few more,” Deveridge said. “We are hoping to add a few more slots so we can enroll more seniors. The only requirement to be a client at the Troy Nutrition Center is that you are 60 years old or older. There is no income limit.”

Deveridge said the nutrition center is open Monday through Friday and offers a variety of recreational opportunities and the fellowship of friends and neighbors.

“Every day we serve a nutritious meal that includes an entrée, two sides, bread, dessert, milk and juice and for only one dollar,” she said. “We have an outstanding nutrition center and we encourage those who would like to participate to contact us for more information.
